5 of the Most Recent (And Tragic) Celebrity Breakups

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

We’ve all known this for a long, long time, but — just to clear up any misconceptions — love is dead. Dead. RIP.

You probably realized this after your first “true love” smashed your underdeveloped, high school heart because he ~changed~. Or, hey, maybe you’re a fast learner and discovered this revelation in middle school when you never got asked to dance to Bruno Mars at the 8th grade semi formal. Or, maybe, you realized it in college after your boyfriend-who-isn’t-your-boyfriend ghosted you one random Tuesday afternoon (which I’m convinced is something only a literal psychopath would do).

Regardless, love usually isn’t staring up at the stars and sharing milkshakes — not for us college students, OR our favorite celebs. 2017 was a rough year for some celebrity love birds, and honestly, 2018 hasn’t been any better. And now you’re left to think: if these above average humans can’t seem to make it work, what the hell are we supposed to do?

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan

If you didn’t start off the morning of April 2 tearing up while obsessively looking at Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan’s best red carpet moments, you’re lying. Or, you’re just like, mentally stable. Can’t relate. In tragic news, this former duo officially called it quits in early April, after nearly nine years of marriage. The two fell in ~love~ during the filming of their movie Step Up in 2006, and their daughter, Everly, was born in 2013. On April 2, Tatum and Dewan stated that although they will always have love for each other, they are headed in different paths as of right now.

Justin/Selena/The Weeknd/Bella Hadid

This tangled mess all began in 2010 when ~Jelena~ was born in a Philadelphia IHOP — romantic. Naturally, Selena and Justin spent the years of 2012, 2013, and 2014 on-and-off-again, putting us fans through more emotional turmoil than our preteen selves could handle. In January of 2017, Selena was spotted with The Weeknd, who had reportedly split with Bella Hadid in November of 2016. Like a punch in the gut, Selena and The Weeknd broke up in the fall of 2017… and… she’s? back? with? Justin? Like one could (sadly) expect, the two broke up (again) this past month — and for the sake of my inner 14 year old self, let’s hope it’s for good.

Gigi Hadid and Zayn

News of Gigi and Zayn’s breakup emerged in early March, and just one short month later, Zayn cleansed his Instagram of all his pictures — including those of Gigi. Seriously, is nothing sacred anymore?

Literally every Bachelor couple ever

After race car driver/real estate agent/douchebag Arie Luyendyk Jr. decided to dump Becca Kufrin on film, can we really expect any Bachelor couples to do anything as simple as stay together? With Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell breaking up in May of 2017, Nick Viall and Vanessa Grimaldi calling things off in August of 2017, and literally every Bachelor Winter Games couple calling it quits, it’s truly hard to believe that any love actually comes from this show. But am I still going to watch Bachelor in Paradise this summer? Duh.

Logic and Jessica Andrea

Remember when Logic bought Jessica Andrea a new Mercedes-Benz G-Class for Christmas? You better step it up, boys. Tragically, after two years married, Logic and Jessica are “much better as friends.” Hopefully she can keep the Mercedes-Benz though!

Despite all of these separated couples, there still are a few Hollywood pairs that seem to defy the odds — such as Chrissy Teigen and John Legend or Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Honestly, protect them at all costs.

With all of these celebrity couples throwing the towel in on their relationships, it’s hard to remain hopeful for all of us plebeians. But as long as Ryan Reynolds continues to make marriage jokes about Blake via social media, I will keep on carrying on.

When Rachel isn't obsessively drinking iced coffee by the gallon or binge watching true crime videos on YouTube, you can probably find her writing about her failed love life. She is currently a  junior (*she's ancient*) journalism major at Temple University, and is a Her Campus Temple Campus Correspondent, a Temple Student Government Social Media Manager and a 2020 Owl Team Student Coordinator.
