Hear Me Out: T. Rexes Were Dragons

I have a question that I’ve been thinking about for a really long time:

Why do we assume the T. rex looked like the terrifying, tiny-armed dinosaurs we’ve been talking about since elementary school?

And before you laugh and stop reading, hear me out.

Look at a chicken. Now imagine taking all its feathers away. Suddenly, its body looks completely different. Its wings look like tiny, awkward arms. Without the feathers and other soft tissues, you would probably never look at a naked chicken and think, “Ah yes, clearly this animal is designed to fly.”

But we all know the wings were there. We know what the chicken looks like with all of its feathers because we can literally see them.

Now take that idea and apply it to a T. rex. When you see a T. rex skeleton, what do you see?

A giant body, huge skull, massive legs, a long and thick tail, and two hilariously tiny arms. And for decades we’ve all collectively decided: Yep. That’s what it looked like.

But here’s where I’m getting confused. What if we have been looking at the dinosaur all wrong? What if we compare it to the body of a plucked chicken?

Obviously, I’m not saying that T. rex secretly flew around like giant eagles. (Although I beg to differ.) I’m saying that bones don’t tell us everything about an animal’s appearance. When we reconstruct prehistoric animals, there are things we have to infer rather than directly observe; we can’t see the tissues, feathers, skin, and muscles that the creature might have had. And that makes the T. rex’s tiny arms particularly interesting to me. 

What if those weren’t just tiny arms? What if they were a part of a much larger feathered, flying structure? 

We already know that birds are living dinosaurs. Their wings didn’t just appear out of nowhere; they’re modified limbs. Feathers also existed in non-flying dinosaurs, and scientists have found evidence of feather-like structures in several dinosaurs. This article goes into the scientific findings and evolution of feathers. 

So, when I look at a T. rex’s tiny arms, I can’t help but think about a naked chicken. Because if you stripped a chicken of its feathers and showed someone only the skeleton, or just the exposed limbs, they might have a very different idea of what the animal looked like. 

Here’s where my dragon theory comes in. 

What if the reason dragons feel so familiar is not just because of How to Train Your Dragon, but because we’ve been imagining dinosaurs with features that actually make sense. A giant, reptile-like animal. 

Huge jaws. Claws. A long tail. Powerful legs. And potentially feathers that make its body look completely different from the skeleton underneath. And then humans came along and did what we do best: we made it cooler. We added fire and horns, and eventually we called it a dragon. 

I’m not saying this proves dragons existed. I’m saying that the image we’ve created of dinosaurs might be much more limited than the animals actually were. 

Maybe we shouldn’t be asking why the T. rex had such tiny arms. Maybe we should be asking: What were those arms attached to?
