7 Things You Need to Know Before Visiting Billy Bob’s Texas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCU chapter.

Coming to Fort Worth opens up the possibility to learn about the area’s country-western culture. A big part of this is Billy Bob’s Texas, the world’s largest honky-tonk and my favorite place in the city. Billy Bob’s (simply called “Bob’s” by the regulars) is filled with western decorations and pool tables. Typically, I bypass these and walk straight to the main dance floor, which is full of people excitedly waiting for the music to come on. My first time going to Billy Bob’s Texas, I did not know what to expect, so here are the seven things I wished I knew before attending for the first time.

1. Wear Something Cute & Comfortable

Picking something to wear to Billy Bob’s can be a challenge. It’s important to know that your comfort comes before everything else. First, pick an outfit that is cool — literally. It’s hot inside of Billy Bob’s, and you will be dancing! I recommend short sleeves or a tank top, even when it is cool outside. Additionally, bring a ponytail holder to sweep your hair out of your face mid-routine. Second, I would suggest wearing something that is not constricting. You want to be able to move easily and raise your arms above your head. Finally, wear comfortable shoes. Boots are the best choice because they are slick and comfortable. If not, sneakers are an awesome alternative. I would suggest avoiding heels. While cute, they lack control on the dance floor and make it more difficult to move. If you’re at Bob’s for more than an hour or two, it’s good to make sure you’re comfortable. Trust me — you won’t want to leave!

2. It’s Okay to Not Know How to Dance

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again: It is okay to not know how to dance! Don’t let dancing intimidate you. No one knows what they are doing at first, and there is a learning curve. Feel free to ask others questions, and traditionally the male leads so you can follow along as you learn. You will catch on quickly.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Someone to Dance

Asking someone to dance can be scary. You’re putting yourself out there and approaching someone, sometimes even a stranger. The boys feel the exact same jitters. In the 21st century, it’s time to normalize girls asking others to dance. When I ask people to dance, I feel empowered. Plus, it is a great way to ensure the partner of your choice! I like to observe the dance floor to see who I want to dance with before asking someone.

4. Drink Lots of Water

It is so important to hydrate before, during, and after your trip to Billy Bob’s. You will be hot, dancing, and sweating. Water is available at the bar, but I would recommend keeping a water bottle in your car so you can have some as you leave.

5. Have a Driving Plan

Whether you are using a ride service or driving a car, it is important to have a plan. If you or a friend is driving to Billy Bob’s, park across the street in the large parking lot. This is a free parking zone, but the parking directly next to the honky-tonk requires payment. Make sure that you communicate with those you ride with throughout the night. With Bob’s being open so late, you want to leave at the same time and stick together.

6. Check the Schedule

Billy Bob’s concert schedule is on their website, and they often post about different events on their social media profiles. Thursdays are College Night at Billy Bob’s, so college students gain free admission. Bob’s hosts many concerts and events throughout the year. If you are going on Thursdays for free admission, it is important to make sure there is not a concert that night. If there is, you will have to pay admission for the show. There are still plenty of people at the honky-tonk on days other than Thursdays, and if you are looking to learn how to dance, I would recommend going more than once a week. If you’re looking for a place other than Billy Bob’s, you may also want to check out Red River in Dallas on Thursdays and Saturdays. If Bob’s is having a concert, Red River makes for an incredible alternative.

7. Relax and Have Fun!

It doesn’t matter if you’re a great dancer or not! It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing! Going to Billy Bob’s Texas is a great place to get to know other people and let loose at the end of the week. Enjoy dancing and laughing with friends, and be sure to come and say hello to me while you’re there!
