In a few short weeks, incoming freshmen will be moving into TCU’s dorms to kick-off an amazing school year! Here at Her Campus TCU, we understand that college dorm shopping can be a fun and stressful process. After living in a dorm for a year, I learned a lot about what worked, what didn’t work, and what I definitely don’t need to bring back for my second year on campus (hint: you don’t need to bring every pair of shoes you own). However, there are five key items that made living in a dorm much more enjoyable. While a basic dorm shopping list covers the majority of what you’ll need, these five must-haves are worth the extra splurge.

1. Vibrating Alarm Clock

My favorite purchase of the year was easily this alarm clock. Whether you’re known to hit snooze ten times or are an early riser, this is a must-have when living with roommates. This alarm clock slips into your pillowcase and wakes you up effectively without a making any noise.

2. Shower Flip Flops

These special shower flip flops were an impulse buy last summer, but turned out to be a great investment. These durable flip flops have holes in them that make it easier to stand in dorm shower waters. They also dry off quickly when you make the trek back from the community showers to your room.

3. Bedside Organizer

This little invention was perfect for holding my phone, TV remotes, books, pens, lotion, Kleenex, and more! Keep in mind that your desk will most likely not be next to your bed, so having somewhere to stash miscellaneous items is necessary. This organizer is made with durable material, so it’s great to use for years to come.

4. Extra Blankets

In addition to your bedding, consider buying one or two of your favorite blankets to place at the end of your bed. They’re perfect for a quick nap, movie nights with friends, and make your bed look crisp and clean when it’s made.

5.  Plastic Bags

While the final item on the must-have list is not glamorous, it is very practical. I recommend buying a package of snack sized and gallon sized bags. Want to pack a snack for class? Need to pack your shampoo to fly home for winter break? How about consolidating all of those flash cards from class? Plastic bags are the easy solution.

Buy them: Kroger, Target, or any drugstore.
