This Season’s TV Guide to New and Returning Shows

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Now that it’s officially Fall, it can only mean one thing: great TV shows! This season, there are a lot of great returning shows and some promising new ones. With so many shows on the air, which ones should you keep up with? We have the guide for you!

New Shows

The Mindy Project
(FOX, Tuesdays at 9:30)
Created by and starring Mindy Kaling, aka Kelly Kapoor from The Office, The Mindy Project follows hopeless romantic OB/GYN Mindy Lahiri as she tries to balance her personal and work life and find love. Not only was the pilot funny, but there’s plenty of eye candy on the show: Ed Weeks with great abs and a very attractive British accent, and Chris Messina with that angsty bad boy thing going on. They play two of Mindy’s co-workers who she may eventually be in a love triangle with if the sexual tension in the pilot is any indication. It’s on right after New Girl, so just leave the TV on for an extra half hour next Tuesday and give it a chance!

Nashville (ABC, Wednesdays at 10)
Although this show isn’t premiering until October 10, it has already garnered a lot of buzz from critics who are calling it the “Best New Show.” Starring Connie Britton from Friday Night Lights and American Horror Story and Hayden Panettiere from Heroes, the show follows Britton as a washed-up country singer forced to team up with the younger teen sensation, Panettiere, in order to save her career. Even if a country musical drama doesn’t sound appealing to you, it’s worth checking out at least once to see what all the talk is about.

The New Normal (NBC, Tuesdays at 9:30)
Yes, this is on at the same time as The Mindy Project, but NBC is pretty good about putting their shows online the day after they air so you can still watch both. The New Normal is from the creative mastermind, Ryan Murphy, who is responsible for Glee and American Horror Story. The show has many familiar faces: The Hangover’s Justin Bartha, The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Nene Leakes and Girls’ Andrew Rannells. Bartha and Rannells play a gay couple wanting a baby and Georgia King plays a single mom willing to help them out. Given Murphy’s successful track record and the show’s heartwarming, funny and thought-provoking moments, The New Normal is set to be one of fall’s most popular new shows.

Returning Shows

How I Met Your Mother (CBS, Mondays at 8)
It has recently been revealed that this season of HIMYM may be its last, which means we will finally find out who the mother is! Throughout the show’s seven seasons, we have followed Ted Mosby, played by Josh Radnor, on his quest to find “the one” and all of the zany situations Ted and his friends get into on the way. The show is hysterical with a lot of quotable moments and phrases, and you can’t help but root for good guy Ted to find his true love. The last season will finally give us the answers we’ve been waiting for, so don’t miss it.

New Girl (FOX, Tuesdays at 9)
Everyone’s favorite sitcom is back for season two. Last season, we fell in love with quirky Jess and her roommates Schmidt, Winston and Nick. The cast has great chemistry together, and last season they brought in a slew of great guest stars including Justin Long and Dermot Mulroney. With so many laugh-out-loud moments, New Girl is a great show to watch with your friends and wind down after a long day of class. Plus, I think we’re all waiting and rooting for Nick and Jess to get together, right?!

The Voice (NBC, Mondays from 8-10 and Tuesdays from 8-9)
With so many singing competitions on TV, is it possible to choose one to watch? Do you even want to watch any of them? The answer is yes. The Voice is back for season three with judges/mentors Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton. The judges must create a team of 16 contestants to mentor throughout the competition. The first round is blind auditions in which the judges’ backs are to the contestants while they perform. Next is the battle round, where each judge will have members of their team compete against each other for one of eight spots on their team. The third round is the live show, where the contestants will perform, and America will get to vote for their favorites. This is not American Idol, that’s for sure.

The Challenge: Battle of the Seasons (MTV, Wednesdays at 10)
MTV’s long-running reality competition show is back again for its 23rd season. Each season, MTV picks alums from The Real World to live in a house together somewhere in the world, compete for money and provide plenty of entertaining drama for viewers. Because this is an MTV show, there is plenty of alcohol-fueled nights with yelling, fighting and hooking up. It’s The Amazing Race and Jersey Shore rolled into one incredibly entertaining show.

Which fall shows are you excited for?
