In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I’ve been watching rom-coms and daydreaming about when my own personal meet cute will happen. Like any lonely person, I love a good meet cute. From the minute I saw Troy and Gabriella sing that duet together in the ski lodge, I was hooked. I believe every cute meet is a good one, no matter how corny or cliche. However, these are some of my personal favorites!

1. The Holiday

Iris and Amanda are two women who are looking for a change of scenery in their lives. They meet on a website where people will temporarily swap homes, and decide to exchange houses with each other. Iris lives in a cute little cottage in an English village, while Amanda lives in a huge mansion in California. After the swap, Amanda is having a hard time adjusting to the small, cold English cottage. She is suffering from boredom and desperately attempting to find ways to keep herself busy. That night, Iris’s brother Graham knocks on the door, having no clue Iris is in California. He is fairly drunk, and very confused when he is greeted by Amanda, an American woman who is noticeably out of place in the town. Their first meeting is perfectly awkward, yet perfectly flirty, setting up their love story for the rest of the movie.

2. Set It Up

Charlie and Harper are both assistants who work in the same building in New York City for two highly demanding bosses. The first time they meet, they don’t particularly like each other. Harper ordered food for her boss, but when she went to get it from the delivery man she had no cash to pay with. Charlie sees this and takes advantage of the situation by paying for the food and taking it to his boss instead. Both are in a tough situation, needing to get the food to their overly entitled bosses or risk getting fired. They end up compromising with the food, and both safely deliver it to their bosses. This meeting sparks a bond between Charlie and Harper as they find themselves in similar situations. They come up with a plan to make their bosses fall in love with each other. They hope love can lighten up their bosses’ lives and distract them from work, making Charlie and Harpers’ lives easier. As they spend more time together devising this plan, they start to realize maybe they’re the ones who need love in their lives.

3. About Time

Maybe this isn’t the best meet cute ever, but I just love this movie and couldn’t imagine not adding it. Tim and Mary’s love story is unlike any other, because Tim has the ability to travel back in time. After moving in with a family friend in London, Tim is feeling really defeated about his love life. Finally, on a night out with his friend, Tim meets someone very special. Tim’s friend takes him to a restaurant where the staff are blind and the guests eat in the dark. They get sat next to two girls, with Mary right next to Tim. They instantly hit it off and have very friendly conversations during dinner, each matching each other’s humor. They agree to wait for each other outside the restaurant, and meet in a place where there is actually light so they can see each other. In the restaurant, Mary expressed her insecurities about the way she looks, but of course when Tim sees her she is beautiful. Their interaction is very sweet and innocent, and they exchange numbers. Tim walks home feeling like he finally got a win, when he realizes he missed a very important event that night. He travels back in time to make it to the event, but in doing this never gets Mary’s phone number. This movie is so heartfelt, and the connection between Tim and Mary is, in my opinion, so perfect.
