Lizzy McAlpine’s newest album Angel released on September 18th, 2026. This album includes fourteen tracks, exploring love, heartbreak, friendship and grief–and if you know Lizzy’s music you know to keep tissues on standby. Today I’m gonna be reviewing each song in order on the album!
- “The light in the painting”
- This is a pretty song and one that I can imagine someone in a relationship relating to. This song perfectly encapsulates what it’s like to find your person. The lyricism is so beautiful, relating a connection to someone as the light in a painting.
- “Anybody’s fool”
- This is a slower tempo song, but one that still has a sad message in it. This song to me is about the bittersweetness of life after a breakup. The idea of enjoying not being somebody’s fool, but still having the instinct to reach for that person during hard times. I really like the messaging behind the song more than anything else, as again I feel as though it is so relatable for many people.
- “A car wash and a new pair of pants”
- This is by far my favorite song off the album. It’s definitely more upbeat with the instrumentals in the back, which makes it so engaging right off the bat. I love her higher pitched voice in this song so much. I also really love the title of the song, as I find it to be very original.
- “I have a friend”
- Another slower tempo song, with nice acoustic guitar coming through. This is honestly my ideal study music, as it has a very relaxing vibe to it.
- “The moon”
- This is a more upbeat song. I really love her choice of words in this song, specifically “The handsome prince and maiden fair I am in your debt I am no freer than the moon.” I took it as her finding herself so completely encapsulated by her relationship, despite it looking almost picture perfect and like a fantasy on the outside.
- “Ugly things”
- This is actually so sad. To me, this song is about someone you once knew not being the same person they used to be. The idea that you once knew someone so well, to them now being a stranger. I definitely relate to this song, and I think many others can as well. This song hit me hard.Â
- “Soldier of the road (feat. Fleet Foxes)”
- This song gives me very folk-ish vibes. You can definitely hear the acoustic guitar coming through in the back as well. This song reminds me of a medieval world for some reason, in the best way possible. Another song I can see myself studying to.
- “Peach”
- This is a slower paced song. To me, this song is about you learning to live a life different from a past relationship. Trying to accept a new life and focus on finding peace. I think a lot of people can learn from this song and also relate to it.
- “Over country”
- This is such a cute song and one that immediately went viral on the internet with long distance relationships. This song is about having someone love you no matter what. Having a connection so strong that distance and time does not even come into play. This is such a sweet song when thinking of those closest to you.
- “Two elevens”
- This is yet another song that I found very relatable. To me, this song is about finding closure with a past relationship. Being able to look back and remember what was once there, but knowing that what happened was for the best. Knowing that there was something at one point and that’s all that matters.
- “Our strange ways”Â
- This is her longest song on the album at about seven minutes and twenty-three seconds. This song is about having an emotional reliance on someone she loves, but also being distanced from them. It’s about not wanting to live in a world that doesn’t have that person in it. The song starts off slow and then picks up halfway through and then gets slower again at the end. I thought that was really cool especially because towards the end, it goes silent, and then cuts to piano with Lizzy singing in a more intimate manner.
- “Mason’s song”
- This is another cute song that I take as a song about friendship. I like that this song talks about looking back on the people they were compared to now, and how they couldn’t have grown without each other. I really like how the line “I can’t do it alone” repeats throughout the song to show that her friendship has helped her and continues to help her throughout whatever she is going through. I think a lot of people, including myself, can relate to this.
- “The crowd”
- This is yet another sad song, but one that’s different from the rest of the album. Lizzy wrote this song about her dad who passed away in 2020. She emphasizes how she wished she said more to him while he was still here and how she just wants to make him proud. She finds it hard to remember certain things as they’re now a blur. This is a very heartfelt song, and it makes me want to give my dad a hug.
- “Angel”
- This is the last track on the album and one I would consider to be more heartwarming on the album. I feel as though it is about moving on while carrying what came before. It almost reminds me of a new chapter starting. I think this song was a great way to end the album!
Overall, I really enjoyed Lizzy’s new album. I already relate a lot to Lizzy’s music, and Angel gave me even more to relate to. The biggest standout for me was definitely “A car wash and a new pair of pants,” but I highly recommend the album if you generally enjoy slower-paced songs with clever lyricism.
