If you want to go out with the girls this Saturday night, if you have an open mind, if you’re interested in one night of alternative debauchery … make your way over to a goth industrial club!

For my 21st birthday, I went to New Jersey’s #1 alternative dance club and had the time of my life. It’s just like a “normal” dance club with a bar and sketchy men’s restroom, but it plays different music and caters to a different crowd—the goth industrial scene. I wanted to share my experience with you and give a little insight into the subculture beyond the stereotypes. Maybe you’ll end up interested in seeing it for yourselves!

Disclaimer: these are my observations and interpretations based on one night at one club.

We entered the dark space. Children of the night sat on couches, their faces devoid of emotion. I didn’t see a single smile and wondered if I would feel out of place. Eventually the place livened up as more nightcrawlers were drawn into the club and onto the dance floor. We crept through three rooms filled with fog that made the lights look tangible. The DJs spun darkwave, synthpop, and everyone’s favorite—80’s music! I was surprised by the variety, which included Daft Punk and Fischerspooner. I’ve heard that the night occasionally ends with a little N*Sync or Lady Gaga!

The reality of the people
I’m sure you’ve said at some point, “But I can’t dance!” Here there is no judgment of dance ability. There is no feeling insecure or not “hot” enough. The club hosts such a variety of styles, but in all that difference, there is acceptance and equality. Some simply wore t-shirts and jeans while others were decked out in corsets and intricately crafted eyeliner. There were a few cybergoths with neon dreads and furry rave boots. There were stockings that appeared as if shredded by a lawn mower, boys that looked like fairies, and people just like you and me. My friend pointed out that beneath the morbid clothing, these partiers were probably accountants by day. I met models and mothers and a few who work in the porn industry! You’ll run into all sorts of interesting people here.

It was fascinating to watch those who were industrial dancing. Ordinary dancing with your girls is acceptable too of course! The alternative club was unlike other clubs in which boys sometimes sneak up and attack from behind. There was no groping or grinding. When you dance with someone here, they will respect your body.

Advice to brave souls
Depending on the place, you may be able to enter in any attire—dressed up, casual, or just out of the office.

Check if a dress code is required. You don’t have to go full out, but it could be fun! Plus, a little black may do you some good.

The scene seems to be dying out, but those who remain faithful flock to the goth industrial club. This is a good place to be with your kind if you can’t find them elsewhere. If the style is foreign to you, keep an open mind and explore alternate viewpoints. Don’t gawk or make rude comments. Have fun with your friends, but also try to meet new people!

Enjoy your night. It should be an experience…

Learn about the music and dance in this silly video. Yes, you probably should avoid fist-pumping.
