How To Hold Onto Your Faith In College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Most people find that it’s hard to keep their faith alive in college, especially if you’re away at school. I am a Christian, and I have worked hard to keep my faith strong. Here are some tips I have based on how I have worked through certain challenges!

  1. Never back down when your faith is questioned On two separate occasions, I have had in-class discussions with professors where my beliefs were challenged. These situations allowed me to show my faith by being a considerate person while simultaneously standing my ground. You should show that just because someone challenges your beliefs, doesn’t mean it’s going to impact your strong faith. Don’t back down, or lose hope.
  2. Make time for your faith In college, between exams, homework, friends, parties, clubs, AND studying, it seems like there’s never any time for God to fit in with everything. Spending time with God is important because there’s so much stress and anxiety in your life that it can be easy to lose your faith. Here’s some tangible suggestions for how to make time for your faith:
  • Take even 5 minutes every morning before class to talk to God and thank him for all he’s done and for the new day ahead. Ask him to carry the weight of your stress and worries and to help you through them and this day. It may seem minimal, but it helps tons!
  •  Look to see if there’s a bible study group on campus that you can join. Set aside an hour or two every week for this organization. At TCNJ, New Jersey Christian Fellowship has small group bible studies for everyone and everything as well as a large group worship meeting called Encounter that meets from 8:30 to 10:00 PM on Thursday nights.

    3. Help others understand your faith. Friends don’t always share your beliefs. It’s hard when not everyone around you believes what you do. In college, you’re exposed to people with           varying beliefs, and this can challenge your faith. To overcome this challenge, ask your friends if you can share your faith with them. Invite them to a bible study so they can experience         what your beliefs are.

Ask God for His hand in your role at college to live for Him. He will always guide you on the right path.
