Hey collegiettes™, it’s that time of year again! Christmas? Not quite, but just as equally awesome, Halloween is upon us. Now, whoever says you’re too old to dress up has probably never had an awesome costume, but don’t let this discourage you. Tight on money you say? Don’t worry, Her Campus has got you covered with plenty of ideas on how to make your own costume and save some cash. You’ll be strutting your stuff all over campus before you know it!

Originality:
The beauty of making your own costume is that you aren’t just limited to what’s in stock at the store, so the only thing limiting your choices is your imagination. That being said, originality is key in making your costume a memorable one. During Welcome Week, some people may have seen what looked like a cardboard rocket ship running around on campus. Yeah, my floor made that. The rocket ship was made out of pieces of cardboard taken from empty printer and furniture boxes that would have normally wound up in the dumpster. Now, the rocket ship is fully assembled and can fit two people inside, which could make for a really unique costume and hilarious icebreaker while trick-or-treating.

Even if you’re going for the cute costume, give it an original spin. For example last year I was a fairy but added a new twist to it by using a corset top I already had as the top and made a skirt for the bottom out of tulle material.

Classic:
Forget dressing up as another Snooki from Jersey Shore, how about bringing back classic looks? A timeless costume that never goes out of style is the flapper girl. For this attire, the focus should be the flapper dress, which is basically just a neutral toned dress covered in rows of fringe. As far as accessories go, you can’t go wrong with beads, pearls and even a feather headband. Don’t forget to break out in dance to the Charleston for that extra flair!

If the flapper getup isn’t your thing, jump a few decades into the 70’s and you’ll find that the hippie look can also be appealing. Give the costume a cool, casual vibe by putting together bellbottom jeans, a tie dye t-shirt and moccasin slip on sandals. Accessorize this costume with a peace necklace and a colorful or beaded headband.

Finally, you can even reuse clothes that were once worn for that neon party and create a workout girl costume. Any colors will work for this costume and it’s one that you can really go crazy with. Think back to Jane Fonda’s workout videos from the 80’s because this is the look you want to go for where she wore leg warmers and a leotard. If you don’t have a leotard a bright tank can work as well as spandex and tights, but remember, the goal here is to stand out as much as possible. Tie your hair into a side ponytail and you’re good to go.

These are just some of the many ways you can dress up this year and without breaking the bank on a tight college budget. Don’t forget to have fun with this and be as creative as possible, now get to work girls!
