Five Freshman Must-Haves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

Be sure to pack these five essentials for a happy transition to collegiette™ life!

1. Rain Gear

I know what you’re thinking: those rubber rain boots are clunky and near impossible to pull off. That’s what I thought freshman year, too—until I ruined my favorite sneakers in the amazingly deep puddles on TCNJ’s campus. You will not be sorry if you get a pair of decent rain boots, an umbrella, and a rain jacket. The truth is, TCNJ floods very easily due to poor drainage, and the puddles are impossible to escape on rainy days. When you have to walk across campus to get to class, you’ll be glad you have the proper rain gear. Plus, rain boots come in endless patterns and colors—it’s the perfect opportunity to show off your individuality!

2. Earplugs and an Eye Mask
For all you light sleepers out there, earplugs and an eye mask are must-haves. I know you might be feeling optimistic about you and your roomie being best buds and doing everything together, but unfortunately, there are going to be nights when she stays up on her computer and the light and sound will drive you crazy. Not to mention the rush of returning partiers shouting outside your door at three A.M…

3. A Bathrobe
If you’re anything like me, the prospect of walking down the hall to the shower wearing nothing but a towel is a bit daunting. If you’re living in the Towers, you’ll be living amongst the opposite sex—and for some, this makes the walk to the shower somewhat uncomfortable. Not for everyone, mind you, but a cotton robe will help make the journey easier. Plus, if you leave your clothes in your room, it prevents them from getting wet in the communal showers. There’s nothing worse than being stuck in the bathroom with a wet change of clothes!

4. Microwave-safe plates/bowls

One thing is for certain: college students quickly become experts on takeout food. Without a microwave-safe plate or bowl to heat up your leftovers, you will surely be a bit miserable. Target has fantastic (and affordable!) sets of plates and bowls in all sorts of fun colors. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to invest in a Pyrex or similar brand bowl that is sturdier and comes with a top. With these tools, you’ll be a microwave pro in no time!

5. Wristlet and/or lanyard
One of the most useful accessories a college girl can have is a wristlet and/or lanyard to house her student ID card and license, cash, and cell phone. Even if you always carried a purse throughout high school, you won’t need to (or want to) carry a big bag around campus all the time. A small wristlet that can keep all your essentials on hand is all you need (really!). The bookstore has a decent selection of Vera Bradley wristlets, but if you want to opt for a cheaper alternative, start looking before you get to campus!

Jessica is one half of the fantastic duo founding Her Campus on the leafy suburban campus that is The College of New Jersey. A Journalism major and Communications minor in the Class of 2012, she is a native of Pennsylvania and an adoptive resident of New Jersey. That's why she can't fist pump, but can pump gas. Before Her Campus, Jessica was a newspaper reporter, communications assistant and world traveler, having studied and interned abroad in London. When she's not writing or talking up a storm, Jessica can be found bargain shopping, catching up on a good book, fiddling with her camera or attempting to stay in shape. Other passions include hummus, tickling those ivories on the piano, meeting new people and all things Her Campus.
