After living home for the summer, moving back — some of us for the first time! — to campus can seem like a huge change in both a student’s environment and lifestyle. As a Community Advisor, I understand how difficult it can be to transition to school-life. Make your move to TCNJ a little smoother this semester with advice from your very own Her Campus CA!

Your Guide to Guilt-Free Living

Need to know what you are allowed and not allowed to have in your dorm room? Learn what the violations and policies are through the Residential Education and Housing page prior to moving in. By learning what you can and cannot have in your dorm room before coming to campus, you will be able to get everything you want without feeling guilty about your room décor this Fall. Bet you didn’t know that shot glass collection is a no-no unless you’re 21, those Christmas lights are absolutely off-limits and you will have to make do with the Library Café or Eickhoff for your morning caffeine needs because coffee pots are not allowed.

There is Never a Dumb Question!

Many residents are often nervous about asking their CAs for help! Whether it be with a roommate conflict, a policy violation, or just a question about campus-life, students may decide to try and figure it out themselves. Instead of looking online or asking other residents, go to those who know the right answer — your CAs! We will be able to tell you when roommate-switch day is, where to find the Loop schedule, and can even help you do laundry. There is never a dumb question and CAs are trained to help you with anything and everything in the residence halls!

Keep Both Your Mind and Door Open

Whether you are a freshman who lives on a floor with brand new people, or if you are living with your friends in Townhouses South this year, try to be social! If you’re a new student, by having an open mind and an open-door policy, you may be able to make friends for years to come. If you are an upperclassmen who is living with their friends, you may be able to broaden your social circle and have an even better college experience in your living area.

Realize Your Resources Early

Many students do not realize they need academic help until it is half way through the semester. Instead of waiting until your bi-annual One-on-Ones with your CA to understand the academic support available on campus, realize what your resources are early on in the semester. Know where the Center for Academic Success and the Tutoring Center are located prior to the start of classes. If you find throughout the first couple of weeks that a class is more difficult than anticipated, you will be able to get the help you need easily.

Remember, CAs are here to ensure your success as a student at TCNJ. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn more about what our campus has to offer!

Jessica is one half of the fantastic duo founding Her Campus on the leafy suburban campus that is The College of New Jersey. A Journalism major and Communications minor in the Class of 2012, she is a native of Pennsylvania and an adoptive resident of New Jersey. That's why she can't fist pump, but can pump gas. Before Her Campus, Jessica was a newspaper reporter, communications assistant and world traveler, having studied and interned abroad in London. When she's not writing or talking up a storm, Jessica can be found bargain shopping, catching up on a good book, fiddling with her camera or attempting to stay in shape. Other passions include hummus, tickling those ivories on the piano, meeting new people and all things Her Campus.
