A Collegiette’s Guide to March Madness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

It’s a man’s favorite time of year: March Madness. So what better way to impress guys than to show them you know a thing or two about college basketball? Nothing’s more attractive than a girl who knows her brackets, and there’s a good chance your picks could be better than his. Here are a few tips to get you educated about the sporting craze that guys love so much.

Know names of players: Name dropping is always a good way to show you know what you’re talking about. Check out some of the top teams in the country, see who their leading scorer is, and store that name in your memory bank. Then, casually bring it up in conversation. When you start talking about how special of a player Victor Oladipo is, that will surely get a guy’s attention.

Check out the mascots: This is a simple way to get in the know about schools, but also to pick a bracket. Just see what the mascots are of each school, and pick the cooler one. Michigan Wolverines vs. Tennessee Volunteers? It’s easy and fun to debate about, and because March Madness is so unpredictable, your mascot method could give you a successful bracket.

Don’t sleep on the little guys: The most fun part of March Madness is determining the sleepers; which smaller schools have the best chances to play David and upset Goliath. Check out an article online and see which sleepers the experts are picking. It’s a lot more impressive than picking the favorite, and if you happen to pick correctly, guys will start to take notice.

Look at the stats: The casual college basketball fan may not even know a lot about the numbers behind the game, but it goes a long way in predicting games and judging teams. If you can pick a stat or two and memorize them, you’ll have a piece of knowledge that a lot of guys may not even know. For example, talk about how Colorado State is the best rebounding team in the country, and then check out the look on his face.
