A Collegiette’s Guide to Living in the Moment: Positive Energy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

At the start of the new year, I made a promise to myself; that I would try to take in everything around me and live in the moment. How many times have we heard this; “live in the moment”? How easy it is to forget this little saying. In college, we endure so many new experiences. The days move so quickly it seems as though time is on a film reel, spinning and spinning as scenes of our lives pass us by. It is so easy to get wrapped up in what we are doing and what we are trying to achieve. But once you pause the reel and think about what you have experienced and what you want to experience in the future, it’s easier to focus on one moment in your life and treasure it, each scene at a time. So this year, I made a promise to remember this little saying. Life is so beautiful; every moment is one to be thankful for. From the encouragement of some of my closest friends, inspirational quotes have helped guide me on my journey. One of the first I came across this year has been one that has helped me find positive energy in every moment of life.

“Love the moment and the energy of that moment will spread beyond all boundaries.” – Corita Kent

There are days when it seems impossible to look past the negatives. A bad test grade, a fall-out with a close friend, a fight with a boyfriend; sometimes things just don’t seem to be going right. Even with the comfort of our friends and family, it seems almost impossible to bounce back after a rough day. But sometimes, the greatest comfort of all comes from within.

It’s always great to let out our emotions over a cup of hot chocolate and a great talk with our girls; but our internal conversation can be the most powerful of all. We can draw strength from the moments that made us happiest. Think back to a moment when you were happy; a day on the beach, a romantic evening, a movie night with the girls. Thinking back to a moment in the past brings us back to the scene and the feeling of happiness comes swarming back to us. The warmth of the sun on our backs, the splash of the waves upon our bronzed skin, the sensation of the breeze and the scent of the sea surround us in a time when we were happy. The energy of the moment is all around us. In what seems like life’s darkest moments, all we need to do is think back to a time of happiness and joy. Thinking of a blissful memory is no cure for the Monday blues, but the energy that comes with that remembrance can bring us through our struggles.

Now, when I am going through my day and I experience happiness in a moment like having dinner with the girls, or singing along to Adele with my roommate, I take in the energy of the moment and hold it close. For when tomorrow comes and I need a little bit of hope, it is the energy of the moment I loved that transpires into the new day. Positive energy is limitless.
