5 Things No One Tells You About Transferring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TCNJ chapter.

1. It’s not just like freshman year again.

The biggest misconception about transferring is that “it’s going to be just like your freshman year all over again.” It’s not. If you’re even lucky enough to get on-campus housing as a transfer, it will be a whole different experience than the one on your freshman floor. Since you’re not forced to eat dinner together or have your door open to get to know who’s around you, meeting new friends won’t be as easy as seeing who lives next door.

2. You will make friends.

If you were going back to the same school for your second year, you probably already knew who you were looking forward to seeing again. At your new school, you could be worried that everyone on campus already has their own group of friends and isn’t looking for new additions. By joining clubs, sports and Greek life, you’ll meet many groups of people with room for more. Just put yourself out there!

3. You’re going to miss things about your old school.

Whether you left the BIG10 for a smaller school or went from commuting to living away, your previous school has made a mark on you. Even if it’s something as simple as missing the dining hall pizza, don’t think it’s wrong to be nostalgic about where you came from. Do keep in mind that you left for a reason and just like you had to adjust the first time, you have to adjust again. Make sure you give your new home a fair chance.

4. You’re not going to lose touch with your first college friends.

Leaving your best friends since pre-school after high school is hard, but as a college freshman you quickly get used to phone calls between classes, Skype dates and weekend visits to keep friendships going. Staying in touch with your freshmen year friends after transferring is no different! With Snapchat and group messages, you don’t have to give up old friendships.

5. It’s worth it!

The first few weeks might be even harder than those first few of freshman year.  Don’t get discouraged. Make sure you embrace every bit of your new environment and jump in with both feet for the best experience. Going from a huge university to our small TCNJ campus can be a whirlwind experience with many ups and downs. Transferring isn’t easy, but it does teach you what you want in your college experience and how to get it.
