Why You Should Watch “Black Mirror”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TAMU chapter.

The Netflix original show might not be super new, but it is beginning to receive notice and views in the United States. The United Kingdom based series shifts reality in unimaginable (what was going through their mind) types of ways.

Crime

In multiple episodes, the show delves in the what-could-be in terms of criminal punishment. I mean could you imagine being forced to replay the events that led you to prison over and over again? Talk about sitting in the corner and thinking about what you did.

Death

Natural occurrences like death are to be expected in tv shows or real life, but the coping mechanism (literally) is beyond thought in season 2 of the series. In another episode, “San Junipero” of season 3, viewers ponder the afterlife as well as true love.

Military

Black Mirror’s season 3 episode “Men Against Fire” explores the unfortunate condition of facing PTSD during and after warfare. Along with the symptoms of the illness, viewers are taken into the mindset of both a soldier that breaks the spell of officials who pick and choose the enemy. I found references to the brutality that might be committed against civil citizens when watching this episode, and it could also be tied to historical events (WWII) when it comes to the brainwashing aspect.

Social Media

Scrolling through Insta/Facebook/Twitter/etc. has become the norm, but could you imagine “likes” actually being treated like money? I mean I guess you can kinda say episode “Nosedive” of season 3, is like Justin Timberlake’s movie “In Time.” Only jealousy seems to be a major factor here, to say the least.

Most importantly the dark and twisted “Black Mirror” plays with the relevancy of technology, which collides in each and every episode. I think overall, the show plays with current events and the underlying psychological reasons for accepting or denying said events. Once you get the hang of the messages the directors are trying to get across, the show will have you coming back for more!

P.S. You will most likely have ALL of these reactions.
