The Legend of Zelda 2 was Delayed, But It’s a Good Thing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at TAMU chapter.

Yesterday, I was on YouTube when I noticed a video published by Nintendo. I saw it was about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, a game I have been very interested in. For reference, the original BOTW came out in 2017 with the Nintendo Switch and has been a popular game to this day. I just started playing BOTW in January 2021, and I still haven’t finished it because it’s so massive.

BOTW is about the return of Link to Hyrule after a long slumber. He wakes up to see Hyrule taken over by Ganon. And Link sets out to defeat Ganon and free Zelda from the battle she has been fighting with Ganon while also freeing the Divine Beasts. Along the way, you learn what has happened to Hyrule while he was asleep while fighting monsters, doing puzzles along the way, and learning the secrets that the game holds. What’s remarkable is that the game can easily take around 200 hours. Heck, I’m only like halfway done, and I’m over 100 hours in.

Going back to the video that I noticed, it was an announcement about the release date of the BOTW sequel. Originally, we were hoping that the sequel would be released this year. But in the video, Legend of Zelda producer -Eiji Aonuma- announced that the sequel would be pushed back to 2023.

Hearing this, I was disappointed. I wasn’t there for the beginning of the BOTW craze in 2017, as I only got a switch as a graduation gift in 2020. Hearing that a sequel was coming out and seeing the most recent trailer made me motivated to finish the game faster. And to also do the harder version, Master Mode, from the DLC (Downloadable Content). I was so excited to have that extra push to finish, but it’s not as much anymore.

Despite this setback, I realize that this isn’t the end of the world when it comes to the game. Like, I can still play it and have fun while also anticipating the sequel. Plus, it’s also a recurring thing with Legend of Zelda games being delayed so that they can be made better. Like I’d rather it be the best form it can be instead of a rush job.

I will say, though, that I hope Nintendo releases more trailers. They have been keeping the sequel under close wraps. And fans have been thriving off of the theories to pass the time. I’m just curious about what’s going on with Master Sword and Link’s arm. It’s apparently connected to past games, but the lore gets me confused sometimes.

Nonetheless, I’m super excited for 2023 already because of this game. I feel like I’m usually late to video game series and don’t get to experience the joy from the beginning like others. So now it’s my goal to finish the first game in time to experience the sequel from the beginning.
