The NCAS Giant Steps Award, which honors students who use sport as a medium for positive social change, is given out to only seven students in the entire nation every year. This year one of our fellow Aggies, Fabyon Harris, proudly sits among those seven.
Snagging the title of Courageous Student-Athlete, Fabyon says, “I felt good, like I was accomplishing something. It gave me more confidence considering where I came from.”
Fabyon grew up in one of Chicago’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods. Losing loved ones due to violent crime as well as being suspended from school, he admits to growing up as a troubled child. However, he didn’t let such discouragement stop him. Fabyon eventually made his high school basketball team, sharpening his skills and working his way towards college basketball.
He now confidently plays for Texas A&M, gaining recognition through his ball skills and hard-earned awards. He considers the sport a top priority in his life.
“Without basketball, I wouldn’t have the honor of being here at Texas A&M,” says Fabyon.
Through perseverance and dedication, Fabyon achieved some of his life goals, and is still working harder to achieve even more. After graduating in August, he plans on continuing his basketball career.
“I’m planning on hiring myself an agent that’ll help me play for a league,” says Fabyon.
