Advice for Wide-eyed Freshmen: Target Run Edition

Move in week is upon us.  Before we know it, the dorms on campus will be filled with freshmen and all Targets around will be completely wiped out of supplies.  And when I say wiped out, I mean it.  There will not be a shred of toilet paper on the shelves or hand soap in the isles.  The HEBs will not fare better either.

I’m entering my third year here at Texas A&M and there are a couple of things I’ve learned.

  1. Hit Up Target Early – aka NOW

As stated above, all Targets will be wiped out within the first week.  And there are some just supplies you need: toilet paper, a vacuum, soap, toothpaste, etc.  The list goes on and on.  And for all of these, Target is your best bet.  But unfortunately, everybody knows this so it is the first store to be completely wiped out of supplies.  So if you solely want a one-stop shop, go here and go here NOW.  If you can’t make it within this week, then it’s already too late.

  1. Hometown Supply Run

I understand, not everybody is moving in within the next week.  Some people are moving in two weeks from now.  So hitting up the Target in the college town you will be living in for the next 9 months isn’t feasible.  So instead, do a supply run in your hometown before you leave.  The only downside to this is if you don’t have the car space for it.  But if you do, definitely shove everything you possibly can into your vehicle.  And if you have a Target in your hometown, bonus points.

  1. If you’re too late to Target, SHIP IT

Like stated above, if you’re too late for a Target run, ship it if you can.  Unfortunately, if you’re a freshman living in the dorms, shipping to you is not an option in the first week.  And there are just some things you can’t go a week without – like toilet paper or a toothbrush.  But if you live off campus, this is your best solution.  (Praise the Amazon gods).  I highly recommend it if you can.

  1. Supply Run in the College Town

Depending on what you need, some other stores will have the supplies you need.  You’ll just have to take a ton of trips.  Ace hardware store has brooms – it’s where I got mine freshman year because the Target was completely ransacked.  Sally Beauty Supply or Ulta will take care of your hair supply needs.  And if you need skincare too, I recommend going to Ulta.  Both are stores in College Station.  The HEB also has a whole aisle dedicated to shampoo and conditioner.  If you’re looking for a vacuum, Walmart might have it – but it also might be similar to the Target situation.
Basically, if you don’t want to be stuck running all over town, hit up Target NOW.

Howdy! I’m Gabriela Gomez, an avid reader who is interested in all areas of publishing and writing. And reading of course! I’m the Editor-in-Chief; I currently oversee all the publishing of articles for the Her Campus at TAMU chapter. I am overjoyed to read all the members’ articles and make any corrections that will help to elevate the article. I have been with Her Campus at TAMU since my freshman year. The first year I was a general member on the Writing and Editing committee. During that first year, I wrote a total of 23 articles and was always finding new ways to help. For my second year, I worked as the Senior Editor, publishing more than 80 articles and writing 38 articles. Now in my second semester of junior year, I have implemented a new pitch process for better organization and cleanest, I have already published more than 170 articles, and I have written 16 articles and will continue writing more! Besides working as the Editor-in-Chief, I am a dedicated student at Texas A&M studying Biomedical Sciences. I am also obtaining a minor in both English and Spanish. While not studying diligently, I work in a research lab grinding away, trying to get my name on some research papers (fingers crossed). In my free time, I read, obviously. I am also on the hunt for the best latte to ever bless this earth and love a good game of chess!
