Why the Seattle Storm winning the WNBA Playoffs is such a good metaphor for life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tampa chapter.

For those who don’t watch a lot of women’s basketball, the Seattle Storm and the Washington Mystic went head to head at the WNBA Playoffs last week. Seattle won 3-0 in a “best-out-of-5” final. But what’s been on everyone mind is: how did the worst team last year become the best one this year?

The answer is simple: They never gave up.

The Seattle Storm has had one of the best basketball players in the league for years now, and her name is Sue Bird. Bird has won Seattle two championships already, but she did not stop working for that third one. Last year everyone believed the Storm would be unstoppable, once Jewell Lloyd or Breanna Stewart came to the team (as first drafts on their respective years), but even with them on their team, they had a pretty bad year. This year, they stopped relying on their good players and decided to play as a team.

This team certainly had significant players who excelled, but those players would not have gotten to that title if it weren’t for the rest of the team. After a bad season last year, the Storm decided to work even harder and try new things in order to get that championship. They got a new coach, they worked better as a team and they made history. So, if Seattle could go from being 5th out of the 6 teams on the Western Conference last year to winning the WNBA Finals this year… why can’t we do the same?

Obviously, I’m not asking you to go out and try to win a basketball playoffs, but I am asking you to never give up. What if Sue Bird had given up on trying to win a third championship ring and just retired last year? Or what if Jewell Lloyd decided to leave the team and go to another one? Everything in life happens for a reason. Seattle was meant to lose last year because if they did not, they would have never gotten the initiative to try harder this year and win this playoff. So, follow the Seattle Storm, and never give up. If you get knocked down, get back up and try again. Of course, it’s easier said than done but once you finally get what you want, all of those hard times would have been worth it. And if you feel like it’s over and done for you, reach out to your friends. Who knows, maybe they can help you get to where you wanna go faster. Teamwork makes the dream work.

This year, let’s all be like the strong, powerful ladies of the Seattle Storm and let’s win this championship.
