Underrated Shows That You Should Be Binging

Are you tired of spending countless hours searching for a new show to stream? Lately, streaming services have seemed repetitive and boring, frequently recommending shows I have either already seen or have no interest in watching. As an avid TV-show watcher, my streaming options are becoming increasingly smaller by the minute. Luckily, I have created a list of what I consider to be hidden gems that I think everyone needs to watch.

Feel good

For fans of shows like Fleabag and Normal People

Rotten Tomatoes score: 100%

It is honestly shocking to me how nobody talks about this show. Created by comedian Mae Martin, this semi-autobiographical show depicts a realistic portrayal of Mae’s struggles with relationships, mental health, and addiction. “Feel Good” focuses mainly on the relationship between Mae and their girlfriend, George, who has not told anyone about her sexuality. Mae Martin brilliantly writes about sensitive topics by combining raw, realistic events with witty lines and fresh perspectives. Both hilarious and heartbreaking (seriously, you will be laughing and crying at the same time), this short 12-episode series can quickly be watched in just a couple of sittings.

Severance

For fans of shows like Black Mirror and Maniac

Rotten Tomatoes score: 97%

This show is absolutely insane. Directed by Ben Stiller and starring Adam Scott, this psychological/science fiction/thriller explores Mark and the mysterious events that unfold at his unusual workplace. The impressive writing and plot twists in this series, along with the unique dystopian setting, make this show stand out from any other that I’ve seen. I can’t really explain more about the plot without giving away major spoilers, so you will just have to watch and see for yourself. Be prepared, however, because season one ends on a cliffhanger.

legion

For fans of shows like Mr. Robot and Daredevil

Rotten Tomatoes score: 91%

In my opinion, “Legion” is the most criminally underrated show that has ever been created by Marvel. Starring Dan Stevens, Rachel Keller, and Aubrey Plaza, this show explores a man who discovers that his incorrect Schizophrenia diagnosis is actually a result of his powers. Even if you are not typically a fan of superhero shows, this series may still impress you through its psychological and science fiction elements. Offering amazing soundtracks, stunning visuals, impressive writing, and powerful acting, “Legion” is a show that I always tend to recommend to my friends. There are definitely some confusing and trippy moments that require some of your concentration, but do not let that scare you away. Besides, who doesn’t want to see Aubrey Plaza play an androgynous, supernatural character?

what we do in the shadows

For fans of shows like Schitt’s Creek and Parks and Recreation

Rotten Tomatoes score: 98%

Directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, “What We Do in the Shadows” is a sitcom about the lives of four vampire roommates and their familiar, Guerillmo (who happens to be related to Van Helsing). Residing in Staten Island, these vampires hilariously attempt to fit into modern society while still maintaining their vampiric lifestyle. I enjoy this show mostly because of its creativity and combination of both comedic and gothic elements. This show is perfect for when you need a lighthearted comedy to watch with your friends.

midnight mass

For fans of shows like The Haunting of Hill House and American Horror Story

Rotten Tomatoes score: 87%

This spooky miniseries is directed by Mike Flanagan, who is mostly known for his work in “The Haunting of Hill House.” This supernatural mystery focuses on a small, isolated island and the complications that arise after the arrival of a new priest. This show impressed me not only through its thought-provoking plot but also through the intensity and raw emotions of the actors. I recall multiple lengthy monologues that kept me fully engaged in both the story and the characters. It effectively displays the complications of strict religious faith through a story filled with horror and interesting characters. Keeping an open mind and maintaining a willingness to enjoy this slow-burn series will ensure that you fully enjoy it.
