Sugar Daddies: Do I Need One?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tampa chapter.

I’m a college student. Let’s just start with that.

I like acai, seafood, and anything labeled ‘organic’. I’m not a vegan or a big health nut, because quite frankly (I ain’t got the cash) but I aspire to have this lifestyle someday. I’m currently working towards a career in something that could sustain these deadly expenses, but as of right now by pretty little credit card and hard working a$$ is paying for my lifestyle. That’s tea.

So where did this idea come from? I guess you can say it didn’t take too long for me to start questioning what my options were when I first came into college. I had only had one job prior to college, no car nor drivers license, and much like today I hardly went off campus. So… Freshman year (second week in), my roommates and I weighed our options but came to the simplest solution: Let’s become SUGAR BABIES.

Day 1 into a super shady website (whose name I shall not disclose) and the messages from older man had begun.

Very quickly, these men wanted to get off the website and begin to text… since you can’t make offers online… and yes, you read that right “offers”.

One of the main things young people (yes, both women AND men can be sugar babies) don’t think of is how these relationships work. Just like any relationship you give something and get something… but instead of giving your unconditional love to each other they give you money and you give them… some sort of happiness.

Now I know I’m being sus but it’s tough to be detailed without putting down the whole situation.

By happiness, I don’t mean just sex. You never know how or what it is that your sugar daddy/mommy would like of you. Most of the time these are just very generous people who gift things from money to lavish toys to those who are willing to spend time with them… or actually, date them.

You don’t have to be attracted to them… but if you want that money, sis…

Forcing to ask ourselves the tough questions: Is it worth it? Are we gon’ work it????

Some girls enjoy dating older men who would lavish them with gifts. When I speak to my guy friends they’d jump at the idea, because “who wouldn’t want to f@#k a milf and get paid for it”.

Easy for them to say, they’re not the ones taking it, not to mention how women more likely to get called out for “taking someone’s money” rather than “getting that bag”. When double standards come into play, society won’t scorn them for too long, women on the other hand…

For me (and like many of you), the idea of getting paid to date someone who I’m not attracted to makes me GAG. But to be honest, I’ve never done it.

I will admit having signed up for multiple sugar relationship sites, chatting with strange men, but never have I ever gone through with a date.

Why?

If you really asked yourself that, that’s the problem. Why does no one consider the dangers of this? Unless you’re letting your roommate, best friend or RA (seriously) know what you’re doing or where you’re headed… no matter how embarrassing, this could ultimately save your life.

Think about it. You’d tell any of your friends when you had a date, yes it’s out of excitement but also a safety precaution… you never know who you’ll meet. And because I’m in Florida and there’s such a thing as #FloridaMan, I have a hard time trusting a guy who says he wants to pay for my company. I give props to those who do go through this because they are pretty brave, but I do hope the best for them too because relationships like this don’t always end well.

Although I am in a point in my life when I could use the extra cash and less stress from work, I don’t think I could start a relationship (let alone multiple) just to pay the bills, but that might just be because I haven’t experienced it and don’t know how simple it is…

If any of you have had experience, I’m all ears. Please! My DM’s are open.
