Lately I’ve been hearing more and more about a phenomenon that is taking over UT—the friend zone. While sitting down with my friend Jake Lupika, whom I can always trust to tell it like it is, I was given the lowdown on what exactly being in the “friend zone” is, and how we can get out of it.
“Any girl who has a crush on her guy friend and has the balls to ask him if he likes her back, f***ing props. But for the 99 percent who don’t, there are definite ways to tell if you are in the friend zone,” Lupika says.
“Guys tend to ask their girl friends how they feel about other girls they may be interested in. They use her response to tell if maybe their girl friend wants more than just a friendship. Usually [if she’s interested in the guy] she will try to pick out pieces of those girls that are dislikable, or just be awkward and quiet as a response. But there are other signs too. If you and your guy friend go the mall a lot, go for lunch a lot, if it feels like you two are dating minus the sex, then let’s face it, you’ve been f###ing friend zoned.”
If you’re still not sure whether your guy is shy or sly, Lupika mentions some definite signs that your guy is into you as more than a friend.
“When a guy wants you he will pursue you. He will make it obvious by making excuses to touch you.”
But what about when YOU’RE the one friend zoning a guy?
“When a guy is friend zoned, he hopes that in those couple hours of complete sloppiness at Cass Bar, his girl friend just might be drunk enough to un-friend zone him for the night. But just remember, it’s a long way back if you ever want to go back to being just friends.”
