How to Keep a Small Space Organized in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tampa chapter.

In college we get a very small space to put all of our clothes, school supplies, food and just about anything else we need to survive. Depending on what grade you are in, you are sharing a room with two, three or even four people, and you need to divide that space up evenly.  Organizing and keeping your room (or your side) tidy isn’t the easiest with such a small area, so here are some tips on how to keep your room organized and clean.

1. White board/chalk boards/cork boards

If you need something quickly, you know exactly where it is, and where to put it when you’re done with it.  You can get a really stylish board, and hang it on your wall to go with your décor. A good website to find stylish boards is: http://www.zazzle.com/stylish+dryeraseboards.

2. Under the bed storage boxes

These boxes are great to store things that you don’t necessarily use everyday, but still want to keep around. They boxes aren’t just storage boxes, but they are also really pretty, and you can get ones that match your bedding!

3. Hanging shoe racks

THESE ARE AMAZING.  They hang from your closet and give you so much more floor space.  Instead of having your shoes all over the floor, you can neatly keep them in a shoe hanger!

4. Makeup organizers

You and your roommates can each get trays or organizers that hold all of your individual makeup and toiletries. You can use them on an everyday basis, so your counter is not messy, and you can actually see the sink.  If you want, you can even get really personable and monogram them with your names or initials so that you don’t get confused!

5. Make your room as functional as you can

If you are only living with one other person, the two of you can bunk your beds. This way you will have more room for your desks, wardrobes, or maybe even a couch! Since dorm rooms are so small, you really need to make the best out of the space that you have. It’s important to visualize every way that your furniture could go.
