Featured Organization: She’s The First

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Tampa chapter.

Did you know that one in five girls in developing countries finish primary school? As a result only 33 percent enroll in secondary school to pursue a higher education. That is only one to every three female students. Less than two cents of every dollar actually benefit these young women.

We live in a country that strives to help others, day in and day out. So, what can you do to help these girls continue their education and make their own mark on the world? Well for starters join She’s the First! A new organization on UT’s campus that sponsors girls’ education in developing countries, to produce first generation graduates. These young women will become the next generation of global leaders and create change in our world.

Co-founder and Secretary of the UT Chapter of She’s The First is Leanna Wade. She is a Government and World Affairs major and Leadership Studies Minor, from Atlanta, Georgia.

“I joined She’s the First because of the opportunity to impact people beyond UT,” said Leanna.

She believes that this is a unique organization; the main goal is to promote these girls and learn how to fundraise for them.

“All children deserve a quality education,” she said. “This organization was started by a girl in college who saw a need in the world. She’s the First affords us the opportunity to get involved.”

Living in the United States, we are all given the leisure of pursuing a secondary education, more often than people who live in other countries. We come to college or universities trying to better the world and ourselves. One way which we can do that is immersing ourselves in activities or organizations on campus. She’s the First is a prime example. We are the future leaders of the world. To have followers and great citizens we need to help each other.

Make sure these women are the FIRST priority not the last. They deserve a chance at success just as much as anyone else.
