This week’s Campus Celebrity is the recently crowned Mr. SAI!
Nineteen-year-old Spencer Hubbard is a double major in Ad/PR and Theater. Coming all the way from Batavia, New York, he is in his sophomore year here at UT. In just a few short years, Spencer became involved in many different organizations on campus. Not only is he an RA in McKay, but he is also in UT’s improv troop, Gluten Free, and the Ad/PR chair of the music fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha.
Someday, Spencer would like to work with Buzzfeed. However, he mainly wants to pursue a career in stand-up. During open mic nights, you can hear him read some of his “hate letters”. These include “annoying girl”, which he rants about his feelings on being asked to be someone’s gay best friend, “loud child” and my personal favorite, “slow lady”. Each letter is hysterical and if you ever get the chance to come out to one of the open mic nights on campus, you won’t be disappointed.
During his freshmen year, Spencer was casted in Six Characters in Search of an Author. He got to experience what it was like to play a silent character, which he had never done before. This gave him an opportunity to expand his talents and take on a new challenge. He is also extremely grateful to have been casted with Erin Knowles, who later became one of his closest friends. Through this experience, their friendship grew and continues to grow to this very day. You can catch Spence in 4×8: A Collection of One Act Play this December to see him in action yourself!
You may be wondering what his favorite part of UT is. When asked, he simply responded, “It’s pretty, like me.” Before graduating from UT, Spencer would like to take leadership roles in the organizations he’s in and also obtain a lead in a main stage show.
Spencer’s advice to freshmen is to get involved on campus as much as you can. “It makes your life here so much better! It’s the best way to meet people and also learn more about yourself!”
I am lucky enough to call Spencer one of my best friends and I can attest to what a kind and loving soul he is. Just a little peek into the kind of guy he is, I once texted him saying I wanted pizza from Pandinis and he was at my door within fifteen minutes, pizza in hand.
When asked to describe himself, Spencer says, “I may be pretty, smart, talented, lovely, endearing, funny, and friendly. I am above all, humble.”
