In other news… Butts are taking over the world

Have you been noticing the recent aBUNdance of booty selfies on Instagram lately? It seems that the latest trend appearing on social media, film, and music videos is located just south of the waist and all up in your face. Butts are everywhere, even in places we don’t want them to be, and they’ve been fully embraced and welcomed. But why butts? What do butts have that our faces don’t? And more importantly, what do butts have that our brains don’t?

Body image—it’s a commonly debated topic that people are sick of hearing. And though many butt selfies on Instagram are supposed to be showing pride in a girl’s successful workout results or how she feels about herself that day, many just plain cross the line. And as a result, bathing suit bottoms are losing fabric by the minute. But the truth about butts is that, like the people they hug, they’re all different. This is something I need to keep telling myself as I scroll through my Instagram feed and die a little each time someone’s butt peers up from the bottom of my page. Because not only does it disappoint me the way that girls are portraying themselves to all of their follows (don’t they have family members seeing that?), but my own confidence shrinks a little bit as well. As if it’s not enough for us to get these feelings when we see these images in magazines, now they’re on constant parade during the majority of that awful, boring class you secretly spend liking and posting on Instagram and Twitter.

As I said, it’s understandable when someone feels confident about their body one day and decides to take a picture or when they just so happen to be standing on an angle that flatters their backside, but not when they forget to wear clothes other than underwear or a skimpy bathing suit over their cheeks. We often forget how many people keep track of the things we post on social media. I know my dad would feel really uncomfortable if he ever saw my bare cheeks in a bathing suit gracing his phone screen while he catches up on his social media at night (because he does do that, actually). But more importantly, your future boss isn’t going to be so in favor of such pictures either. Just because Kim Kardashian’s doing it, doesn’t mean you should too.

Regardless of the circumstances, your profile on a social network is yours to customize and show the world who you are. With that said, it’s important you focus on your other assets too, like your interests, hobbies, friends, smarts, creativity, sense of humor, etc. And if you should feel your butt looks slammin’ one day as you look in the mirror, go ahead and snap away. But do so tastefully and remember your audience. You are so much more than your butt and your body, because you are beautiful from the inside out.
