Music is essential for my daily life, whether I am walking to class, cooking, driving, or even studying. To make it more simple, there is almost nothing in my life I do without music. Depending on my mood and the task I am going to be performing is what decides the genre or kind of music I want to listen to. For example, lo-fi or soft music for when I need to concentrate and hype-fast music for cleaning or driving. I like several genres of music, but what mostly predominates is K-pop. A year ago, while listening to K-pop, I came across the group called “XG” and fell in love with them.

Creating a new Movement and style

“XG” is a seven-membered global girl group that debuted in 2018 with their single “Tippy Toes,” but was formed in 2017 through the X-GALAXY project under XGALX which is a subsidiary of AVEX, a record label in Japan. “XG” stands for  “Xtraordinary Girls” and means thinking outside the box and destroying the mold. The group is composed of Jurin, Hinata, Harvey, Cocona, Maya, Juria, and Chisa. All of them are unique and special, but combined, they create a new style of music. Their goal is to be known worldwide and inspire the new generation of artists with their unique style, genre, and concepts.

Personally, I love “XG” because you never know what direction they will be going next, and they just keep improving. Their music videos are insanely creative, outfits are fire, choreographies are just so fun to learn, rhythms make you wanna dance or get stuck in your head, and lyrics will just stick with you no matter what, whether their catchy chorus or their fun raps. You just never get tired of their music because of how fun it is. I think two songs someone who does not know “XG” should listen to are “Shooting Star” and “New Dance”.

“Shooting Star ” demonstrates who “XG” are and how they work hard to achieve their dreams. Harvey describes the lyrics: “We a movement, never losin’, Makin’ moves, stay poppin,” as being a strong person that cannot be beaten down by anyone, in an interview with Billboard. Other lyrics from the song that I think shows who “XG” are and my favorites from the song are found below:

“Babe, if I give it my all, will it pay off?

Workin’ overtime, no days off

All these shootin’ stars in the dark

All these shootin’ stars in the dark, make a wish

Takin’ off from the ground, it’s amazin’’

So outta this world, I’m in space

Now I’m goin’ up, headin’ to the stars

Wouldn’t trade it out for another life, no”

The other song I mentioned above is their newest single, “New Dance”. It was released just last week and is a fun song. The colors, the outfits, the dance, the locations, and the lyrics are very refreshing. Like its title, the song is about letting go and having fun, especially dancing as well as showing the bond the girls have. The music video shows the girls having fun while still doing choreography, but they feel relaxed. It is like they aren’t trying to be cool; they just want to be themselves and have fun while achieving their dreams. Personally, the center message of the song can be portrayed with these lyrics (see below):

“New dance Slide with my girls to the party (Gon’ slide)

We ain’t come to bother nobody (Nobody)

We just came to have a good time

Don’t wanna hold back, go crazy

We just wanna dance all night

This beat has got me feelin’ alright

So take that step and turn around

Spin around, touch your head to your toes

Long as you steady, keep your eyes on the floor

Don’t care who’s watchin’”

“XG” is its own style and is so unique that once you know them, you won’t be able to get away. They just inspire happiness, motivation, and confidence.  Without even trying to learn their songs, they will stick to your brain, and who knows, you too might become an “APHAZ” (their fan name).
