It’s just about that time of year: spring cleaning! We’re guilty of finding it difficult to let go of pieces that were once favorites but have since retired to the back of our closets. Justifying keeping pieces you no longer need is so easy, especially ones that involve hard-earned money or sentimental value.

If you find your wardrobe constantly growing and you have an overflowing dresser, yet you always find yourself thinking you have nothing to wear, it’s time to assess your items to find which ones still fit- both in size and style.

As you consider each piece, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Does it fit?

2. Have I worn it in the last year?

3. Will I ever wear it again?

4. Is it outdated?

5. Is it still my style?

6. Is it damaged (ripped/stained/missing buttons/faded/etc.)?

7. Would I still buy this if I were to go shopping today?

8. How do I feel when I wear it? Does it make me feel good about myself?

If you answered “no,” to any of these questions, it’s probably time to get rid of the item! At this point, you can decide whether to sell, donate, or throw it out!

Option 1: Sell

If you’re on a budget, sell items that are still in style and brand new or gently used. You can go the traditional route and list them on eBay, or make a stop at Plato’s Closet on East Genesee Street.

Option 2: Donate

If you’re not worried about an ROI, donate unwanted items that are still in good condition to those who could really use them. You can bring your items to Goodwill or The Salvation Army.

Option 3: Throw it out!

If you personally would not want the item due to stains or tears, throw the item in the trash pile. If there is a minor flaw, like a missing button, consider getting it fixed before deciding what to do with it.
