The Heathers are Here

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

If you like the drama of Mean Girls and the theatrics of musical theatre, then you probably already have your ticket to the First Year Player’s production of Heathers the Musical, opening April 14th through the 16th at Goldstein Auditorium. If not, maybe you should check your priorities. This is certainly a show you won’t want to miss.

Veronica Sawyer, the new girl in school, is invited to join the most popular clique at Westerburg High, otherwise known as The Heathers. She soon realizes, however, that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Life spirals out of control for Veronica after she and her boyfriend, J.D., accidentally poison head-bitch Heather Chandler. She suddenly finds herself balancing the pressures of high school with the guilt of murder and the psycho antics of her serial killer boyfriend.

Since auditions, the cast, crew and pit have been hard at work learning music, choreography and blocking — all taught by students who make up the staff of FYP. First Year Players is an entirely student-run organization consisting of about 100 people. It’s the staff’s job to pick the show and appoint creative heads, like the director, choreographer, stage manager, music director, etc.

As the first-years head into tech week – their final week of rehearsals – all hands are on deck. The cast recently pulled a dining hall take over, visiting all the dining halls on campus and giving a sample of what’s to be expected when you come to see Heathers the Musical. The banner above Schine Student Center and the grassy knoll in front of Hall of Languages are decorated with Heathers promotional materials, and the public relations team is hosting a contest to win free tickets.

Be sure to keep up with the First Year Players on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at @FYPSyracuse. And don’t forget to buy your tickets at Schine Student Center for $4 with your SUID. It’s going to be some BIG FUN you won’t want to miss.
