Embrace Your Inner Basic This Fall!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

During the wonderful crisp season that is Fall, a lot of women bring out the most basic inner parts of themselves. That means pumpkin everything, scarves, leggings with riding boots, hair in a bun, and doing all the fall activities with photographic evidence. But recently, for some reason, that inner basic that beats behind the surface of so many of us has begun to be shamed by others, specifically those pesky internet trolls.

Because of the basic shaming that occurs, mostly on the internet, those who look forward to doing the most basic things, especially in the fall, are beginning to feel ashamed of themselves for their inclination towards the basicness and are thus hiding away parts of themselves.

However, there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. Doing those basic things that you love and want to do should not be a source of shame just because some lonely people on the internet do not have the same zest for life that you have. I say, embrace the basic.

When you fully embrace who you are, with an I don’t care what anyone else thinks approach, it can be extremely liberating. No one should have to hide the things that they love for fear of becoming fodder for internet trolls or judged in public.

So if in the fall you inherently become pumpkin-obsessed, be pumpkin-obsessed. Do not be ashamed to go to Starbuck’s or Dunkin or wherever and order a PSL. Don’t be ashamed when the barista calls out your order and you walk up to go retrieve it. And if you get looks when you promptly begin Snapping a pic of that PSL, especially if it’s your first of the season. Love what you love unapologetically.

Fall wardrobe is something basics look forward to almost as much as PSL’s. Nothing feels more liberating than dressing for the crisp fall weather in the signature leggings, riding boots, sweater and scarf, completed by hair in a bun. It’s comfy cute and pairs well with that latte that we will regularly have in hand. If we are going to be comfortable, we might as well look cute doing so. So, let the people wear what they want. It shouldn’t matter to you anyway. Where this is mostly becoming an issue is in many school districts across the country as they ban leggings. Typically this ban is met with mass outrage, as it should be. Leggings aren’t showing things that they shouldn’t. They are a comfortable pant alternative.

Lastly, we basics love the fall activities like apple picking, going to a pumpkin farm, hayrides, and cider mills. Of course you have to document the trip with an Insta worthy picture that you can pair with a cute seasonal caption. Do not feel judged for writing ’Tis the Season’, ‘Fall-ing for you’, etc. as your captions because they are cute and you enjoy doing so. Just because someone doesn’t get it or thinks it’s dumb doesn’t mean you should feel shamed.

Those shaming you for you basic nature are the ones that have a problem, not you. You’re simply doing the things that you love in a season that just tends to bring it out full force. Do not listen to what the people who do not enjoy everything you do get you down and definitely do not bottle that part of you up. It will only lead to unhappiness and resentment. Be you. Embrace the basic.
