The only constant is change and the change from a big city to a small city can be a lot
to handle. As a third year student I know that coming back to SU from NYC may
sometimes be bittersweet and definitely takes some getting used to. No matter where you
are from, this place can sometimes seem like worlds away from the familiar hometowns you know and love.
Here are some local hot spots to hit if you’re feeling homesick or just want to
explore Syracuse!
Jamesville Beach: Jones, Rockaway, Long Island Beach, so many getaways at your
fingertips in the city. Jamesville Beach is the perfect place to relax, have a picnic and take in
upstate New York scenery.
Everson Museum: Located in downtown Syracuse, the Everson features work from American
artists from the 18th century to the present, including paintings, sculptures, drawings,
photography, and video. For all of you who miss having the MOMA and the Met blocks away from home,
this is the quick fix for your art and cultural urges.
Carousel Mall: Who doesn’t love shopping? Although it’s not quite as glamorous as 5th Avenue
shopping, it’s definitely within reach for a college student’s budget. Boasting all the crucial stapes, from Aeropostale to Forever 21 to Coach, and a convenient movie theater on the upper level, Carousel is a great place to go and get off campus on the weekends. If you don’t have a car, don’t worry — the mall is still a cheap bus ride away. Check Schine for schedules.
Syracuse Stage: Don’t be fooled — the Stage isn’t just for acting majors. If you appreciate theatre and miss waiting in Broadway’s half-price ticket line, this is definitely a place to look into. Amazing shows cycle approximately every mont, students get special pricing and it’s very close to campus!
Armory Square: Miss being around Union Square or Times Square? Dance clubs, fine
dining, shopping, and historical places can all be discovered at Armory Square! One of the
tokens of Syracuse, it offers the downtown staples necessary for not out on the town with
your hallmates.
Green Lakes State Park: One thing “Little Orange” has on the Big Apple is
the beauty of the nature that surrounds us. Visiting Green Lakes State Park can make you
feel like you are worlds away from the stressful hustle and bustle, especially for a city girl like me!
