How to survive flu season on campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Susqu chapter.

We all know too well that a college campus is a germfest, here are some tips for avoiding the flu:

1. Be careful what you share

The flu mainly spreads through saliva which can be exchanged by sharing things like cups, utensils etc. Also be sure that you don’t share makeup, using disposable applicators can be fine but never share lip or eye products. So don’t take a sip of your friend’s drink or ask to use her new MAC lipstick.

2. Check your food before you eat it

Having the stomach flu is no fun at all. The best way to avoid this would be to make sure you thoroughly cook your food. Check for mold or any signs of rawness.

3. Sanitize gym equipment

Whether you’re an athlete or just someone who enjoys fitness, always make sure you wipe down your gym equipment before AND after you use it. You never know who used it before you and whether or not they are sick. Be sure to avoid going to the gym if you feel a little sick.

4. WASH YOUR HANDS

This may seem like common sense but it never hurts to be reminded. Always wash your hands after using the bathroom and before eating.

5. Keep your phone clean

As much as we love our phones, we must accept the sad truth- they are covered in germs. Be sure to wipe your phone screen as much as possible or maybe invest in disposable screen covers.

6. Drink plenty of water

Staying hydrated is one of the best ways to nurture your body and protect it from illness.

7. Avoid contact with sick people

It may be hard but try not to get to close to your friends if they are showing flu symptoms.

8. Get plenty of rest

With tests, papers, and lots of assignments due it may seem impossible, but try to get at least the recommended 8 hours of sleep. Trust me, your body will thank you.

9. Visit the Health Center

The health center is an amazing resource for avoiding the flu. They have face masks and hand sanitizer to avoid germs spreading. They also offer drink vouchers and class notes for if you do get sick.
