I am a first-year at Susquehanna University. One of the biggest things I’ve learned so far is to try new things. Since I’m a Theatre and Creative Writing major, it’s expected for me to do some type of writing and auditioning for shows. And sure, these have been great experiences but the more unusual things that I do will be memories for life. So, I intentionally try to push my comfort zone.
One way I’m trying to get out of my comfort zone is by becoming involved in clubs that are out of my area of expertise. For example, I’m trying the American Sign Language club. They are expanding my social circle while also helping me learn. I also joined WQSU, which is my school’s on-campus radio station. I am learning how to be an on-air radio host, which has the possibility of becoming a new passion or a job option in the future. I joined the Animal club, which allows me to work hands-on with animals. Finally, I’m in Improv club and Shakespeare club, which are more or less self-explanatory. Yes, they are both compatible with my Theatre major. But the best thing about all these clubs is that I am having a blast and getting super involved, while also building up a great resume.
Another way to get out of your comfort zone is by going out of your way to volunteer and get involved. This helps you make yourself meet new people. I try to meet at least one new person a day, which means one new name, one new connection. Now, I even meet more than one new person a day. Just be yourselves and try your best. What’s holding you back?
Are you still transitioning to college life? Guess what? You are not alone. It’s still a little rough. But one of the best things you can do is get your name out there. Try new things, experience a different side of life. Take the opportunity, any opportunity, because you just might find something irreplaceable. Whether you find a favorite hobby or a new passion, you have shaped your life. You are expanding your horizons, learning new perspectives. You should try it – whether it’s going out for the sports team, auditioning for the fall musical, volunteering for different clubs, or just meeting new people. These opportunities will shape your very being. You can achieve great things and guess what: I believe in you.
