11 Struggle Every Girl with Curly Hair Understands

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Susqu chapter.

My curly hair is a huge part of my identity. I’ve spent years trying to figure out just how to keep my curls looking good at least one day a week and the journey to cute hair hasn’t been an easy one at all. From what I understand, the struggle is universal. As much as curly hair is a blessing, it’s also a curse. Here are some of the most infuriating parts of having curly hair.

You Can Never Brush Your Hair When It’s Dry

Taking a brush to your hair is guaranteed to turn you into a lion with a mane three times bigger than your own head.

Straightening Your Hair is A LOT of Work

You know that if you want to straighten your hair you have to set aside at least an hour to get the job done and even then, it might not be enough time.

Air Drying is a Full Day Event

If you’re like me, your hair isn’t just curly, but it’s also unbearably thick and takes anywhere from 8 to 14 hours to fully dry.

You Spend an Embarrassing Amount of Money on Hair Product

Shampoo, conditioner, mousse, gel…. The list goes on and on and it’s all expensive.

Your Room is Littered with Broken Hair Ties the Lost the Fight to Your Curls on a Humid Day

It’s always impressive if a hair tie lasts more than two weeks.

Compliments on Your Straight Hair Doesn’t Make You Feel Better

Like yes, my hair does look good today, but what about all the other days of the year when I don’t spend an hour and a half burning myself to get it like this?

  1. Anyone Who Tries to Romantically Run Their Fingers Through Your Hair is Just Asking for Trouble

Their hands are either going to get stuck, get sticky from all the product in your hair, or they’ll just cause your hair to triple in size by touching it.

You’ve Literally Lost Things in Your Hair

Combs, hair ties, bobby pins…. Everything honestly.

There’s Always One Curl that Isn’t Curly

And there’s nothing you can do about it.

People Always Want to Touch Your Hair

I don’t have an explanation for this, but old ladies always ask me if they can touch my hair.

 Ponytails Are a Commitment

Once your hair goes up, your curls are done for the day. They aren’t going to look the same once you try to take them down.

The journey to where I want to be includes writing a lot of words and eating a lot of fries.
