What to expect from the 2019 Met Gala

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

Filled with A-list celebrities, jaw-dropping outfits and twitter fights over who wore the best outfit, the Met Gala is one of the most anticipated events of the year. While the Met Gala isn’t until May, we’ve already gotten some info about what to expect of the fashion and celebrity appearances at the May 2019 Met Gala.

Each Met Gala has its own unique theme correlating with certain fashion styles or one specific fashion designer. This year, the chosen theme is “Camp”, and no that doesn’t mean everyone is gonna show up in flannels and hiking boots. The theme is based off of Susan Sontag’s innovative essay “Notes on ‘Camp’” from her collection of essays, “Against Interpretation”. Sontag explained the style of “camp” as a “love of the ‘unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration’”. Sontag’s description also includes the comparison between kitsch fashion being more serious in the objectiveness of how the style should be portrayed, while camp fashion is a form of performing where everything is objective.

Every year Vogue editor-in chief, Anna Wintour, hosts the Met Gala and enlists other celebrities to co-host the gala. This year, Wintour selected Lady Gaga, Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles and Serena Williams to co-host the event. With a co-chair board with these fashionable celebs, an interesting theme and thousands of online fashion enthusiasts, this Met Gala might be the best one ever hosted!
