Just opening this passed week, Broadway’s newest musical is already receiving rave reviews. It has had a long journey to Broadway starting as a concept album almost 12 years ago. A retelling of the greek myth of ,Orpheus and Eurydice, it takes the tragic love story to an wild new setting and makes the classic characters face issues that feel modern and common. The show focuses on two couples the young, hopeful Orpheus and Eurydice and the tired, distant Persephone and Hades. The show is energetic, exciting and leaves the audience enamored with beautiful choreography and costumes.
2) Harper Lee’s to Kill A Mockingbird

In its second season on Broadway this play base on the Harper Lee classic has been one of the most successful plays in recent years. The story of a young girl watching her father defend an innocent man of color in the 1930s south is a captivating story that has stood the test of time. And the play adaptation seems to be no exception. An award winning production and directing team backing the show put it on a must see list before it even premiered. The show has managed to meet the lofty expectations set for it and continues to be a big draw.
3) Oklahoma!

Another musical fresh on Broadway is the revival of the 1940s classic written by the iconic duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. This revival is not simply a copy, but a unique and fresh retelling. Much of the frills often associated with older musicals have been taken out and characters are more complicated and diverse. The buzz it has created in its first week mirrors the smashing success of its first incarnation and delivers an updated cast for a modern audience.
4) Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Parts 1 and 2)

A little bit of a cheat on my part this is actually two plays. The story that follows the classic Harry Potter series is two plays that capture the magical feeling of the books and is fun for all ages. The story follows Harry Potter’s youngest song in his years at the wizarding school of Hogwarts. A bit of a black sheep in his family Albus Potter struggles as many teenagers do with the added pressures of magic and fame is family receives. The theater in which the shows run were specially renovated for this show and it is beautiful and bigger than the classic old Broadway theaters. The shows can be seen in one theater filled day or split up.
5) Hamilton

If it is anyone’s first time seeing a show and you just need a guaranteed success there is no more sure a bet than Hamilton. A modern classic the, Tony award winning musical written by Lin Manuel Miranda follows the life story of founding father Alexander Hamilton. Modern and energetic the staging and costumes are breathtaking. The story and portrayal by its actor will leave you gasping for air from laughter one moment and reaching for tissues the next. It is a show that has something everyone will enjoy and represents the very best of modern, American theater.
