New York to Build World’s Largest Ferris Wheel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

For those of you who haven’t heard, New York has put plans in motion to build the world’s largest ferris wheel, and it is set to open in 2016. The ferris wheel, which will be built on Staten Island, is going to have views of the Manhattan skyline and the statue of liberty.

The 625-foot ferris wheel will contain 36 capsules that can hold up to 1,440 thrill seeking riders in total. The ride will last for a total of 38 breathtaking minutes, for those brave enough to embark.

The world’s current largest ferris wheel, the Singapore Flyer, stands at 540 feet, and offers views of a few of Singapore’s most notable landmarks.

The New York Wheel will be a part of a larger project geared at generating tourism to Staten Island. Retail stores, a hotel, and restaurants are among the other building plans New York has in mind as a part of a $260 million deal.
