Hot Summer Shades 2012

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

When picking out new pairs of sunglasses for this hot summer, it is crucial to keep in mind that you are always making a fashion statement while basking in the sizzling sun! Make sure you are fully prepared with your coconut oil, towel, cute bikini, and new sexy shades when packing up for a day lounging at the beach…because this summer will rock with shade innovation.

Bring on the intensity!  Colorful, whimsical styles are simply fun and deemed “must haves” for this 2012 sunny season.  While your classic black and dark browns are timeless, one main technique designers used to transform their vintage shapes for 2012 is adding a splash of color. These sunglasses do not have to be an expensive pair either. This way, you can pick out a couple of colorful shades to match several unique outfits.

Pink & Pastels
According to the NY Times, pink is one of the most paramount colors for frames this season. Prada and Dolce & Gabbana have incorporated pastels into their collections. Designer Stella McCartney goes bold with fierce reds. And the colors in designer Zac Posen’s line include green and yellow.

Kitty Cat
Cat eye shaped shades are ruling the season.  Many fashionable labels including Dior, Miu Miu, and YSL are embracing the sexy, ferocious, feline shape in their sunglass collections. This style is flattering to most every face shape, looking especially great on oblong-shaped faces, as it divides up the lengthiness.

Psychedelic Circles
Another popular vintage movie star shape reappearing this season is the circular frame. This shape exceptionally compliments ladies with squared jaw lines, by smoothing out angles in the face. Stars like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé Knowles have been spotted rocking the circle shades.

“Geek Chic”
Round shape faced women should choose more of an angular styled frame to break up the roundness. Marc by Marc Jacobs and Kurt Geiger have embraced the beloved  “geek chic” square shaped shades.

My name is Alexa Mellardo and I am currently a sophomore and Broadcast Journalism major at Suffolk University, located in the heart of one of the most charming cities in the world: Boston. A passionate journalist, I am fortunate to be doing what I love to do….writing! When I’m not composing articles for two awesome online publications (hercampus.com and also collegefashionista.com) and attending classes, I intern at a trendy magazine in the city. In between, I love to shop and spend time with my friends and my boyfriend. I have two addictions: shopping and cupcakes. In light of that, what better place to be than just blocks away from Newbury Street, Charles Street and Quincy Market? My quaint, vintage brownstone apartment in Beacon Hill is where my two best friends and I keep it strictly classy and fashionable. We turned our apartment into a comfy fashionable haven, and we enjoy relaxing and entertaining our friends. Living in such an awesome city provides a wealth of opportunity, fun, and culture to embrace. My dream is to one day be a respected, well-known broadcast journalist.
