Fall Outerwear Trends of 2014

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

There are a number of things we love about fall…especially its chic fashion.  The crisp weather permits a comfortable yet trendy dress code, where light sweaters, knee-high socks, leggings and booties rock the streets.

We just cannot get enough of these fall garments!  However, it is safe to say other clothing items do not receive the same amount of loving.  To be specific, outerwear is definitely a top number on the list.  Jackets and coats can either be an outfit’s best friend or worst enemy.  No one wants to cover up his or her cute outfit with a coat that screams ‘fashion faux pas’…so choose wisely!  Dress your entire ensemble around your coat.

If you are in the market to buy new outerwear this season, listed below are a couple of different trends that are hot on the streets right now.  To recreate any of these looks, I recommend browsing the racks of H&M, Forever 21, NastyGal, ASOS and Lulus.

1. Faux Fur

Faux fur is a chic choice for outerwear, and it is making a fierce comeback this season.  Many faux fur garments incorporate fun patterns, ranging from patchwork and color blocking, to animal print and ombre.  This certainly adds a fresh twist on this beloved classic.

2. Bombers

‘Varsity jacket with a feminine flair’ is what many fashionistas go for when looking for the perfect bomber jacket. These jackets come in a variety of different textures and prints.  The best part is that you can wear them with mostly anything!  They can be rocked for casual plans, or dressed up for a night on the town.

3. Collarless

Another blast from the past is collarless jackets. They remind me much of Jackie O’s classy style back in the 1960’s. Like the faux fur look, this jacket is also big in patterns such as plaid, and look very sweet in pretty pastels.

4. Ponchos and Capes

A critical style difference for all fashionistas to observe: capes and ponchos are two completely different style of outerwear, yet drawing similar characteristics.  Perhaps you could think of them as “sister companies.”  I would say the main difference is that capes typically have a hood and are longer. The upper row showcases ponchos and the bottom are examples of trendy capes.

5. Parkas

Parkas come in a stylish variety of fabrics and textures. This presents many options when choosing the ultimate one to pair with your outfit. There are rain and snow resistant ones, in addition to a savvy twill one for gorgeous fall days. Rocking your parka in denim is a nice alternative to the typical jean jacket.

6. Camel

This color has been everywhere lately and I love it! It can be considered neutral, but when combined with the right accessories or attire, it becomes a bold statement. It can be paired with anything and looks great.  Tip: H&M recently released a bunch of items ranging from jackets to dresses and all other apparel in this color…so definitely check it out!

7. Shearling

If you are not a fan of faux fur and looking for a wool-like jacket, shearling is a perfect alternative.  These jackets are extremely cute, very warm and have varying amounts of fur to suit everyone’s taste.
