The Chainsmokers’ New Album

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

On April 7th, 2017, Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, the dynamic duo also known as The Chainsmokers, dropped their first ever album, Memories Do Not Open. The pair stepped out of their comfort zone and shared 12 brand new songs with the world that will have you on your feet dancing or way deep in your feels. Here’s a review of their latest masterpiece.

  • The One

I love that they chose to open the album with The One. It is an emotional ballad, which is unusual for the Chainsmokers. However, they put an electronic spin on this deep track making it possible to dance and be emotional all at once.

  • Break Up Every Night

This song is easily the next anthem for all those on-again, off-again couples out there. This upbeat, fun track will have your dancing all the way through your next argument.

  • Bloodstream

I hope this song gets a lot of recognition because it is truly one of the best of the album. Like The One, it is a deeper, emotional piece yet with one of the dopest beats the Chainsmokers have created yet.

  • Don’t Say (feat. Emily Warren)

On this track, Emily Warren belts about not making any more excuses when it comes to taking responsibility for your actions. Great message. Even greater beat to go with it.

  • Something Just Like This (feat. Coldplay)

This track is the true epitome of the best of both worlds. A lyrically brilliant alternative piece belted by Coldplay meets a killer beat by the Chainsmokers. What more could you ask for?

  • My Type (feat. Emily Warren)

The talented Emily Warren is at it again except this time she’s wishing someone who only calls when it’s convenient for them wasn’t her type. The Chainsmokers found a way to get us dancing to one of the most relatable problems ever and I love them for it.

  • It Won’t Kill Ya (feat. Louane)

This track is one of the more typical Chainsmoker tracks you’d expect on the album. Louane takes the singing in this track to let someone know dancing with her won’t kill them. The dope, electric beat in the background will have everyone on their feet in the clubs this summer.

  • Paris

Ahh, Paris. This hit track was the first single off the album and truly sets the tone for the album. Its slow-sung rhythm with a soft, dance beat in the background proves the Chainsmokers can make any emotional ballad a killer dance track simultaneously and that is pure talent.

  • Honest

If I’m being honest, this song a whole lot of fun. It just became possible to speak your true feelings and tear up the dance floor at the same time.

  • Wake Up Alone (feat. Jhene Aiko)

On this track, the insanely talented Jhene Aiko belts about her fear of waking up without her significant other next to her. The Chainsmokers amplify this emotional track to the next level with a killer electronic beat in the background. One of my favorites for sure.

  • Young

This song speaks about how hard it is to be young and in love. This fun, upbeat EDM track will be the perfect song to blast in the summer with the windows down cruising along the highway.

  • Last Day Alive (feat. Florida Georgia Line)

This track is a great end to the album. This song belts about the true meaning of now or never and is the perfect dance track for car ride jams or dance parties this summer.

Overall, The Chainsmokers far exceeded my expectations for this album. Every song is brilliant and fun it its own way and shares an important or relatable message. They’ve truly come a long way since Selfie came out and I’m proud of, and in love with, their work.
