The Best Non-Scary Movies To Watch On Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Suffolk chapter.

When people think of Halloween they think of being scared (in a good way). Halloween is about ghosts and goblins and witches and all sorts of paranormal activity. Now that we’re all older we can’t do the normal tradition of trick or treating and trading candy. A lot of us also aren’t 21 and can’t exactly go out to a bar or party. So, what do we do when we can’t go ask strangers for free candy or dress up like a zombie at a bar? Watch movies!

Having a horror movie night is one of the most popular ways people in their 20s celebrate Halloween. But, if you’re anything like me, maybe you’re not a big fan of horror movies. Personally, I get way too scared to watch horror movies, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have a Halloween movie night.

Here’s some popular pics for non-horror Halloween films that everyone loved growing up, and don’t worry, they’re not all “kid’s movies.”

Hocus Pocus (1993) One of everyone’s favorites, which is why it’s first on the list and definitely a must watch this Halloween.

The NIghtmare Before Christmas (1993) When’s the appropriate time to watch this movie? Is it Halloween or Christmas? It’s such a great movie you should just go ahead and watch it during both holidays.

Halloweentown (1998) There’s four Halloweentown movies and all of them are my personal favorite movies to watch during Halloween. If you’ve somehow never seen them you should for sure check them out.

The Addams Family (1991) There’s a bunch of different Addams Family movies and TV shows but the two original movies are on netflix and they’re total classics.

Ghostbusters (1984) There’s now 3 Ghostbusters movies, two back in the 80s and a reboot that came out earlier this year, which was actually one of my favorite movies that came out this year.

Twitches (2005) & Twitches Too (2007) A ridiculous and goofy movie about two sister-witches that were separated at birth. One of my favorites when I was a kid and still a fun watch.

Scary Movie (2000) There’s so many Scary Movies, it’s hard to keep track. They all fall into the comedy-horror genre, meaning they make fun of popular horror movies in a parody-time way. If you’re really not into any type of scary movies, I’d pass on these ones. They still have their jump-scares but they’re still pretty funny at points.

Scream Queens (2015) Yes, I know it’s a TV show but it falls into that comedy-horror genre that I explained above and it’s pretty great. The second season is also currently on TV so there’s plenty to watch.

Big fan of most things involving music, photography superhero & TV shows.
