Black History Month starts on the 1st of March, here are the top 5 movies that celebrate black history!

1. The Hate U Give (Hulu)

Starr Carter is stuck between the two sides of her life, the one in the poor, mostly black neighborhood she lives in and the mostly white prep school that she attends. This divide becomes even more prominent after she witnesses the shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. The movie follows her journey with pressure from both sides as she finds her voice and stands up for what’s right.

2. Hidden Figures (Disney+)

This movie follows the real life journey of 3 brilliant African American women that worked at NASA to launch the first man into orbit. Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson are all mathematicians who did calculations that were used to send the first man into orbit. Katherine Johnson went on to do the calculations for Apollo 11 and Space Shuttle launches, Mary Jackson became NASA’s first African American engineer and Dorothy continued as NASA’s first African American supervisor.

3. BlackKkKlansman (Hulu):

A black comedy film that focuses on the story of Ron Stallworth who is the first African American police officer at the Colorado Springs Police Department. To make a name for himself, he sets out to infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan with a detective he recruits, Flip Zimmerman.

4. Black Panther (Disney+)

This movie celebrates African History with T’Challa as the Black Panther. He returns him to Wakanda, his home, after his father’s death as king. When a threat appears, he is drawn into a fight that puts not just his home, but the entire world at risk. He has to rally his allies and fight to defend his home and his people.

5. 12 Years a Slave (Hulu)

Solomon Northup is a free black man from who is kidnapped and sold back into slavery. While his owner treats him poorly, he finds another who treats him with kindness. After 12 years, he meets and abolitionist who is able to change his life for the better.
