10 Northeast Events to Attend This Summer

Make your 2014 summer the best summer you’ve had during your college career. Balance work, summer classes, and fun in a positive way to make the most out of your summer. We all know the general fun things that we’ll do during the summer, such as going to the pool, trying new restaurants, seeing new movies on those summer days that are way too hot, and going on day/weekend trips with friends. Here is a list of new activities that you should try within the next few months.

1. Misquamicut Springfest: Held from May 9-11 at Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly, Rhode Island. SpringFest will be a series of fun filled blues and rock and roll concerts. There will be beer, BBQ, a Ferris wheel and other rides, a petting zoo, pony rides, and more. Fireworks will be displayed on Friday night. Grab some friends and road trip down to Rhode Island!

2. Taste Of Bar Harbor: The local food festival in Bar Harbor, Maine goes from May 15-18. This festival will feature local restaurants, cafés, and establishments that offer their decadent delights for visitors to enjoy in Bar Harbor. There will be activities, including the popular Chef’s Table, which is a 5-course dinner and wine pairings at one of four exclusive restaurants. Chefs will also be giving tours, demonstrations, and sharing original recipes.

3. Boston Calling Music Festival: This festival is three days long, and will be held from May 23-25 at City Hall Plaza. This festival features performances on two different stages and will be a very fun place to go with friends. There are also tons of bars and restaurants around this area to go to before or after the shows.

4. Lyman Orchard’s Strawberry Fest: The day’s activities include, free tastings of strawberry treats, live music, pie eating contests, horse-drawn wagon rides, and tons more! Come hungry and enjoy delicious strawberry treats, hotdogs, hamburgers, ice cream, and more at Lyman Orchards’ Outdoor Grill. This will be held on June 14th in Middletown, Connecticut.

5. Nantucket Yoga Festival: The Nantucket Yoga Festival will bring together the very best world-class yoga instructors, wellness experts, and healthy living guides. The Westmoor Club will host an exciting opening night celebration, followed by classes and workshops outdoors under tents at Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm. There will be 24 workshops and 15 teachers over one enlightening weekend. This is held on July 11-13, 2014 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

6. Annual Stoweflake Hot Air Balloon Festival: This festival is held from July 11-13 in Stowe, Vermont. There will be more than 25 hot-air balloons soaring for one of Vermont’s most popular summer celebrations at Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa. This is a three-day event where attendees are actually welcome to join in the fun by taking hot air balloon rides. Rides are priced at $275 per person and tethered rides on the hot-air balloons may be available for $10 per person. It is recommended to make reservations in advance.

7. Vermont Brewers Festival: This is an Artisan Craft Beer Festival celebrating Artisan Craft Beer and the Brewers who brew them. Enjoy a great weekend in July at Burlington Waterfront Park, with scenic views of Lake Champlain framed by the Adirondack Mountain Range, from July 18-19 in Burlington, Vermont.

 

8. Sunday River’s Tough Mountain Challenge: This will be hosted at Sunday River in Maine, on July 26th. The Tough Mountain Challenge is a unique adventure obstacle race born in the mountains of Maine. The course is on the alpine terrain of Sunday River ski resort. The course includes running a 5 k in the mountains, under an arsenal of snow guns, crossing ravines, and crawling under ski trails. When you cross the finish line, you will be in the middle of an all-day party complete with live music, barbecues, a beer garden, a free Mini Mountain Challenge for kids, chairlift rides, zip lines, and more.

9. Tanglewood Wine & Food Classic-Western Massachusetts: This is held from August 7th to the 10th in Lenox, MA. Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, presents the Tanglewood Wine and Food Classic. This event will feature wines from around the world, as well as locally sourced foods. You can enjoy these delights in an incomparable setting on the Tanglewood grounds. The Wine and Food Classic includes seminars, celebrity chef dinners, a grand tasting, and cooking demonstrations.

10. Annual Milford Oyster Festival: This festival is held on August 15, in Milford, Connecticut. This festival is filled with arts and crafts, harbor activities, entertainment, food and beverages, a classic car show, canoe and kayak races, children’s games, and national and local entertainers. Several varieties of oysters will be sold at the festival, representing some of the most prominent oyster growers on the east coast of the United States. Enjoy oysters grown from Maine to Virginia.

Ellie Hawkins is a graduate of Suffolk University. She received a BA with Magna Cum Laude honors in print journalism. Ellie is an alumni of Theta Phi Alpha-Gamma Lambda chapter. During her time at Suffolk she was involved with The Suffolk Journal and the Journey Program. Journey is a leadership program that focuses on four focal points: leadership training, involvement, career exploration and service. She volunteered at the Paulist Center Soup kitchen and is still doing so today. Ellie recently went to El Salvador, in January, to help with Habitat for Humanity through her schools Alternative Winter Break program. Ellie enjoys photography, skiing, golf, and watching movies in her free time. Ellie is fortunate enough to live in one of the best cities in the world: Boston. This city provides her with many opportunities from having a marketing internship at the Franklin Park Zoo to taking long walks on the Charles river and exploring the city. She also had the opportunity to study abroad in Madrid in the summer of 2013 at the other Suffolk University location. My dream job is to either travel while writing about the different experiences I have or have a job at Discovery Communications in the PR department.
Originally from Connecticut, Erica attends Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts. She is a senior, majoring in public relations, and minoring in marketing. She founded Suffolk's chapter of Her Campus along with co-Campus Correspondent, Mackenzie Newcomb. has interned at a few start-up companies including Quincy Apparel and Good to Go Organics. She was also a public relations intern at Regan Communications Group, and is currently the advertising/marketing intern at The Improper Bostonian Magazine. Erica also works on Newbury Street at Jack Wills University Outfitters, a British clothing company that is expanding across America. She is very interested in the world of fashion, and hopes to make it big doing marketing/PR for a fashion magazine or as a publicist in New York City or LA upon graduation. In her free time, she enjoys shopping, hanging out with friends, going to the beach, reading, writing, and dancing.
