Adjusting can be difficult but in college everyone has their own journey!
College can be different for everyone; most people have their own expectation on what they think college life will be. Some of us have had better experiences than others, but in the end, when everyone walks across that stage at our graduations, we all have a story to tell. Whether the story is good, bad, or in between, we all have our own journey in this world to embark on, no one will hold our hands and be there to do everything for us, it is up to us how we choose to live life. Even though we may not know if what we choose will be a great decision or a horrible one as people, we must go for it. Yes, mistakes will be made but this is what makes us human, be present, enjoy life. My favorite quote of all time was from the show “The Magic School Bus “one of the main character Ms. Frizzle says, “Take Chances, make mistakes, get messy!” Â
“College isn’t for the weak”
Ariadne Woodsworth, an alumni of Southern University and A&M, and a current Graduate student at the same University.Â
As she reflects on her undergraduate years, Ariadne describes them as an eye-opening and life-changing experience. During this time, she learned valuable life skills including time management, independence, consistency, and effective communication in order to balance everyday tasks and commitments. Ariadne recalls her freshman year as an emotional roller-coaster, from missing her family and feeling overwhelmed by her new environment. To overcome these challenges, she emphasized the importance of creating a strict schedule to maintain order and stay on top of everything.
Adjusting to a new environment can be challenging for some people. Ariadne found that making her dorm room cozy, making new friends, and getting involved in college events helped her feel more at home and distracted her from missing her family. She believes that experiencing new and unfamiliar things can be a good thing and encourages others to explore their university and create long-term memories.
“Just live to the fullest”
Kyle Dane* is junior also enrolled at Southern University and A&M,
Kyle Dane calls his time at his University so far a “movie”, Kyle stated that he has grown dramatically from freshman year to junior year, freshman year he rarely attended campus events or parties he just liked to stay in his dorm with friends do to being anxious he had never been a shy person but for some odd reason he says when he started attending college he found himself being more reserved and soft spoken. Spring of his freshman year he joined many clubs because he wanted to be involved in things just like he was in high school. He says that was the best time to make friends and connections with everyone. From then to now he says that was the best choice he has made. “Don’t seclude yourself in a tiny box. College is your time to grow and find your true identity, find the real you.”
