Why Friendsgiving is So Important

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

During this time of year, it’s hard to remember some of the things you might be thankful for. While you’re busy making that cash over Thanksgiving break, one thing that might slip your mind are your friends. This is where Friendsgiving comes in.

While it is important for you to spend time with and be thankful for you family, Friendsgiving is the time to be thankful for the family you chose. They’ve been by your side through thick and thin, they were there for all the ups and downs and now is the time of year to remember just how much they mean to you.

The food is one big reason why this holiday is so important. Friendsgiving is probably the only time of year that deep frying three turkeys in 40-degree weather is acceptable. Everyone chips in to bring something special to the table. Are you a master chef of mashed potatoes? That’s your job. Can you bake like nobody’s business? You get to handle the dessert. Everything gets divided up on what to bring and it brings everyone together.

Relaxation is another reason Friendsgiving is important. Thanksgiving dinner with your family can be a little stressful, but Friendsgiving is all about relaxing and having a good time. There’s no need to stress out over the place settings or what to put on the television or what to wear. You can show up in jeans and a t-shirt and I can guarantee no one will say you look like a bum. You’re there to eat some good food, drink some wine, and have a good time. You’re not there to impress anyone for whatever reason.

Another reason is that Secret Santas might get picked. I have a tradition with my friends that at Friendsgiving we figure out who is doing Secret Santa that year, what the price limit is, and where/when we’ll exchange gifts. I, for one, love this. Figuring out which joke gifts I might get for any one of my friends makes the night that much better. Plus, who doesn’t love Christmas?

What’s the best part about all of it and the only reason that really matters? Being able to see your friends for the first time in months. Whether it’s because of school, their job, or just not wanting to go out, all of them come out for Friendsgiving. This could be the first time in six months that you see one of your best friends and you can still joke around like they never even left the state. Getting to catch up with them and hear about what they’ve been up to is so exciting and fun.
