Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Travel Abroad

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

Have you been contemplating whether you want to study abroad? Well here’s a few reasons why you should take the leap and go!

1. You get to see the world!

If you’re like me, you’ve been living in the same place your whole life! Growing up in New York was great but I always wanted to see and experience more. Studying abroad gives you the opportunity to live somewhere new and with minimal responsibility. Going away post-grad may be a little more challenging with you trying to build your career and such so the perfect time is now!

2. You’ll feel and become more independent.

With your parents living miles and miles away and a big ocean separating you from them, you’ll feel what’s it’s like on your own. You get to do your own thing and separate yourself from what you already know so that you can learn something different.

3. You get to add a kickass trip on your resume.

Studying abroad gives you more of an edge and helps you stand out! It shows that you can adapt to a new environment and that you’re invested in learning about different cultures. You have the advantage of truly speaking about what a country is like first hand and possibly learning a second language. Also, depending on your major, you may gain extra brownie points. For instance, I’m a journalism major and I hope to travel the world and write about its many cultures and issues. So why not get a head start and travel like I plan to? Well, I did! This past summer I traveled to South Korea and had an experience of a lifetime. Now I get to talk about what I did over in Korea and show employers that I’m serious about what I aspire to do.

4. Say hello to new international friends.

Depending on how long you plan on studying abroad, a few weeks to even a year, you get to make new friends that are sure to last. When I went to Korea I barely knew the people I was going with, but throughout our weeks together we became close and depended on each other’s advice, laughs, and company. 5. The memories will last forever!

Traveling to another place in the world tends to change your life forever. No one can take what you experienced away from you and the memories will stay golden in your mind for as you live. With the world advancing in every way, why not advance yourself? Even if you’re feeling uncertain take the jump and don’t miss out on the opportunity to trademark yourself even more. Honestly, you will never know how it feels to be away until you get away.
