Stony Books: The Sleep Revolution

As a college student, obviously I love to sleep, but with late night study sessions and early morning classes comes making the ultimate sacrifice to not get a full night’s rest in my beloved Twin XL. I didn’t see a problem with scrolling through Tumblr on my phone in bed, going to sleep at 11pm or sometimes 2am, or fitting in naps wherever I could. I thought I could prioritize school or friends above sleep without long-term consequences, but after reading Arianna Huffington’s The Sleep Revolution, I began to reevaluate how I see sleep.

We know sleep is vital to everyday functions, but in college it becomes so easy to forget that. Huffington writes, “The association of college life with sleep deprivation is deeply ingrained in our culture.” By focusing on our sleep schedules in college, studies have shown an increase in energy, mood, and even grades. Here are Huffington’s 12 musts to start your sleep revolution.

Number 4 is one that hit me. The amount of times I have heard people bragging about pulling all-nighters on this campus is far too many. Sometimes there really aren’t enough hours in the day, but why does our sleep have to be the one to take one for the team? Especially in such a high-stress environment as Stony Brook, we need to prioritize our bodies’ needs in order to succeed. College students need to see sleep as a necessity, not a luxury.
