5 Best Places to Study on Campus that Aren’t the Library

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stony Brook chapter.

With finals coming up at Stony Brook and motivation at an all-time low the best thing to do is to find a study spot and make yourself focus on your schoolwork. However as everyone is gearing up for finals the library might be a little over crowded, and possibly noisy, with everyone there trying to study. Here are the best places to study to avoid the madness of the library during finals season.

Humanities Atrium Probably one of the nicest places on campus the Humanities Atrium provides a quiet and relaxing environment to study in. The atrium is essentially a longer hallway but allows sun in from the skylights, which can brighten the mood while studying. It is also quiet, so if your preference is to have a study spot that is similar to the library in atmosphere, the Humanities Atrium is a place to check out.

Charles B. Wang Center Another quiet place on campus is the Charles B. Wang Center. While not dead silent, there are tables there which people use to study and it has a fairly low noise level. There are tables on both the upper and lower levels depending on what strikes your fancy. Also, study breaks will be interesting there as most of the time there are art exhibits on display.

Dining Halls

With the change to the meal plan this year swipes and dining points have become coveted things. So, why not take a few friends and camp out in one of the dine-in options on campus. From West Side Dining to Roth Café, and the newly opened East Side Dining there are a few choices of where you and your friends can study together. These choices are especially good if you don’t like taking breaks for food and don’t mind a little background noise while you work.

Tabler Center for Arts, Culture, and Humanities (TAC) One of the harder things about studying is not opening your laptop and getting straight on social media instead of going to Blackboard like you need to. The TAC has a downstairs area with tables if you like listening to jazzy background music.  There also is a SINC site inside, which will be better to go to than the overcrowded SINC sites in the library. The TAC SINC site is open until midnight and is ideal for staying focused during late night study sessions.

Your Residence Hall Undoubtedly one of the most convenient places to study is in your very own dorm. If you’re living in corridor style dorms there are end hall lounges that provide a convenient place to study away from your room but makes it so you don’t have to go far to study. Suite style buildings have a quiet study room that can be utilized for studying. In addition, most buildings have a classroom or lounge that is good for group study sessions and makes it so you don’t have to face the cold outside.
