Winters Olympics Becoming a Girl’s Club

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

The 2014 Winter Olympics have proven to be changing into a girls club. Some countries are even seeing more female athletes competing then men. The big news coming from Sochi would be the addition of three major events. This year we are seeing women compete in ski and snowboard slope style, as well as women’s ski jump. You are probably asking yourself, “didn’t the Olympics already feature skiing and snowboarding events for female athletes?” While that is partially correct, there is a difference between the various skiing and snowboarding events. The newly added slope style for women is when an athlete attempts some of her hardest tricks while trying to get the highest altitude off jumps. America won the silver in the Ladies’ Ski Slope Style, and the gold in snowboarding. The ski jump is considered an extreme sport in which an athlete goes down a jump, and attempts to land as far as possible while simultaneously being scored on style. The Olympics are far from over and we still will be able to witness these awesome female athletes continue to shine and prove they can play with the boys.
